I know I'm getting into real pernickety detail here, but my memory tells me that McNichol played number 6, with Terry Long at 4. I still have the programmes from those years, but not the energy to locate and get out the relevant storage box. I think you're correct in saying that McNichol then appeared in both full-back positions. Had he played on, would he have gone in goal?!

That raises the question, if a defender (in the modern era) gets a hand to a goal-bound shot but fails to stop the ball going into the net, does he get red-carded? After all, he hasn't - despite his efforts - denied the opposition a scoring opportunity.
