If we're really going to call him out on losing his man for the first goal let's say that McArthur also didn't track Can who scored.

But we shouldn't do either, it happens and they both more than made up for it at the other end of the pitch. For me, Zaha has improved so much this year, he's learning when to pass, dribble, cross and shoot. It's the last bit of his game that really needed to make the step up for him to be a top Prem player.

I voted for him as POTY last year despite his faults, feels like this year is his year that he's going to really push on. 1 goal and 3 assists in 8 games, keep it up Wilf.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Correct. McArthur did not pick up the scorer (Can) and he also failed to pick up Lanzini for W Hams winner too. He needs to work on the defensive side more than Wilf does

Thanks for all the responses. Some great comments written without biting my head off which is a relief, for sure.

It looks like I'm in a minority of one on this point, doesn't it?

I do agree that Wilf has improved his game over the last couple of seasons and he makes the right choice more often these days, without a doubt.

However, I do stick with my assertion about his defending. Some may well say that he shouldn't be defending, we should concentrate on his strong points.

That's all very well but the game has changed enormously recently and sides are producing teams that press with more intensity when the other team are in possession. With Wilf I feel that it is not enough to simply go to your man and stand in front of them; the presence needs to be more urgent and 'in your face'. These days, once you lose the offensive role, the whole team must assume defensive duties even if your biggest strength is an attacker.

I know that our lad has gained a reputation as one who goes down easily and to some extent I agree. I've become so used to seeing those knitted eyebrows and the constant looking around because it's all so unfair. This is part of his game that he needs to lose, in my opinion.

This young man has talent to burn but I feel he needs to up his profile considerably if he wishes to progress to the next level.

So he frowns to much for you and needs to 'up his profile'. What does this even mean?

His defending is good these days. Just switched off a couple times. We have much bigger issues than Wilf's defending

What does this even mean?

Well, it's not about just having a frown, is it? He is not 'frowning too much for me', as you put it. It is the general demeanour of doing the sulk and feeling hard done by rather than getting on with the game in a professional manner and that, my friend, is what the 'profile' is all about.

I think he needs to up his professionalism.

Particularly, he needs to be in the opponents face a lot more when we are on the offensive, to be more urgent and intense in his tracking back, not losing concentration and his man, being less languid when he is on the ball in an attacking mode and looking more urgent and bright when on the ball.

We may have 'much bigger issues than Wilf's defending' but that doesn't mean that he doesn't have issues, does it? Not fulfilling defensive duties effectively and even turning away from an incoming shot may seem like small beer to you, my friend but we are obviously not cut from the same cloth.

Just because he has improved does that mean he can't improve further and get to where he wants? ie right to the top. Because, believe me, it may not bother you but it will bother other potential managers.

And if Wilf really wants to progress then he certainly does need to up his profile, if I dare use that phrase now that we've established what I mean.

Are you clear about what I mean now?

Three assists already this season, which about equals the whole of last season. Needs to improve his scoring rat though. Has had quite a few efforts but keeps shooting from the angle at the keeper's near post where it is very hard to beat him. Instead, needs to shoot across the keeper.

Wilf has matured into an excellent footballer with a little help from Super Al.
He works his socks off every time, and he really cares.
If all the players showed the same commitment we'd have no problems.
I'm astonished that some fans find time to criticise him.

No end product

Don't think he's bad, but if he wants to see how it should be done he should watch Victor Moses performance against Soton om Sunday.

The op is off his tits and don't Chelsea play 3 cbs? Different game. Wilf was poor Saturday but criticising his defensive displays? Talk about his constent going to ground and squables with people when going forward instead.

..not when it leads to an opening goal, they were allowed too much space and time to play and this meant we were chasing very early in an exhausting game, Zaha struggles very badly with being annoyed by opponents and referees and this means he is not concentrating on his duties, he needs to ferking concentrate on the job of stopping teams trying to score and stopping teams successfully winding him up, if he can do this he would be playing for moan.united.

Wilf is a bit inward looking in his play and attitude but AP seems to be trying to improve on this.
Track back when we've lost the ball.
Look up when you have the ball.
Sounds simple but it's willingness to learn that improves you.
