How far did they get at the euros with him in goal?

They did fantastically well and surprised everyone. Not going to deny that at all. In general though, France are a far superior outfit. With a lot more competition in every position than Wales and most other footballing nations.

This is nonsense.

First of hall Hennessey's command of the area was very poor despite his height.

He was also, on a number of occasions, slow to go for the ball or completely flat footed.

While we're being picky it was also a poor kick from him that indirectly led to United's winner the cup final.

Some serious amnesia in this thread

^This. Had Hennessey been in goal for the Liverpool game, we would of all been baying for his blood on here. As for Mandanda, he's a solid keeper. Just needs the defence to sort themselves out around him.

"Look at that. Accident blackspot? These aren't accidents! They're throwing themselves into the road gladly! Throwing themselves into the road to escape all this hideousness!"

SM has been a sitting duck lately. We could have Neuer, Courtois and Mandanda playing simultaneously and our defence would still find a way to give them no chance.

Does he speak English well, do we know? With Hennessy, I felt the defence seemed to give away fewer chances than it did with Speroni and now Mandanda. I don't know if that's really the case or just my impression. But I do wonder if Mandanda speaks fluent English and, if not, how the defence communicates in some of the more nuanced parts of a match. The Steeeeeeve chant probably helps Mandanda's popularity. For the record, I like him but then I also thought Hennessey was under rated.

I don't see them miles apart.

If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities.

Come on, if you're going to criticise our players, at least try and spell them right!

And it would be 3 home wins in a year actually, excluding cup games.

Oh, that's much better! Nothing to be concerned about then?

Extremely picky! The kick went some 30 yards out of the goal where Puncheon lost the ball. Can't blame WH for that.

Also, at least WH came off his line to try and get the ball and he tried to dive and save shots. SM looks like he's not especially bothered at times.

Its more imperative than ever this season for the keeper to dominate his area as grappling with strikers is being clamped down on, with Mandanda doing statue impressions at corners our centre half's are being hung out to dry, come 2.00pm Saturday I will be a lot more confident of a result if Hennesy is back on the team sheet, He appears to be similar to Speroni but our Argentinian was a hell of a lot better at shot stopping, personally I think Speroni would of saved both headers as they were straight at the keeper, one through his legs, 2nd straight through his hands. English footie is all about getting crosses into the box I suspect his weakness wasn't highlighted so much in France due to the different style of play

If Mandanda plays at Burnley, has the sort of game Heaton had last week at Man Utd and we draw 0-0, he will be a hero and the "Pardew must stay" brigade will be out in force !!!!! How things can change in a week !

I suspect he won't! Can't see us keeping a clean sheet. Nor will people be happy with a 0-0 at a newly-promoted team.

Its ironic, Pulis bought WH as Speroni didn't command his penalty box so Super Alan Pardew dumps WH and buys a poor man's Speroni!

So for all of his appearances for us Mandanda watches Dann, Delaney or Tomkins clear crosses, free kicks and corners at will away from anywhere in the area but on Saturday suddenly he is faced with 2 virtually unstoppable headers one after half a challenge from Dann the other totally unchallenged.

Sorry I have to pick you up on this.

Not having a go at Steveee, as I said earlier the jury is still out IMHO, but neither header was unstoppable last Sat. One went under his legs and the other above his head.

If he had stayed 'big and tall' he might have saved the first and better reactions could have saved the second. Not saying he was at fault but that's the small difference between a good and an outstanding goalie.

His style is definitely more of the Speroni - only come and claim if it's a few yards from the goal line and that is inviting pressure. I think this is a fact and not really open for debate.

Some thoughts

1. We have lost a number of players who helped considerably with aerial defending of corners in earlier seasons - including e.g. Jedi, Chamakh, Murray.

2. The "no holding" rule enforcement has hit Scott Dann's effectiveness in particular.

3. Mandanda, frankly, is way off the mark in terms of dominating/collecting crosses.

4. Tomkins needs to improve/put his body on the line in the same way that Damo has always tried to.

Jackson.. Wan Bissaka.... Sansom.. Nicholas.. Cannon.. Guehi.... Zaha... Thomas.. Byrne... Holton.. Rogers.. that should do it..
