Punishment & rehabilitation. The levels of literacy in prisons is frightening Honestly, literacy is awful with a lot of prisoners, there are a large amount of 40 year old men whose reading & writing is worse than a 10 year old. The prisom service do try & combat this by making people do education until they are at a place where they can read health & safety info in the workplace, maybe this is an Arse-covering exercise but at least it works, saying that, I've seen plenty of prisoners who are the hardest grafters you've ever seen not be able to work because they cannot pass the reading & writing tests so you could say that ideas counter productive. My previous post may have seemed negative but to be fair everything is out into "reducing reoffending" but from what I see the figures are pretty accurate, I would say 80% of people I encounter have been "inside" before, some I see 2/3 times a year. It's very, very easy for people without any knowledge living off media information to form opinions about the prison system but you cannot properly judge or form an opinion unless you have experienced it 1st hand, in some instances its f***ed up, in so,e instances it actually works and does rehabilitate people. The crux of the situation is, that if as a prisoner you want to turn his life around he can, but if your hell bent on taking drugs & robbing to support this there's nothing you can do. Stop the drug problem in society you stop almost all crime

Brauny have you seen the Norwegian model for prisoners at this place. Fascinating stuff. From memory, i haven't re-read the article, the re-offending rate is something tiny like 5% or maybe 10%. It works.

yes kermit, of course i have. the main point i take trom this article is the following quote "Norway has a population of slightly less than five million, a 12th of the UK's. It has fewer than 4,000 prisoners; there are around 84,000 in the UK" facts being norway is a much smaller country so by definition they will have less prisoners...the prison in question is a open prison where people towards the end of mid/long term sentences go to. if you took the re-offending rates from just open prisons they would be much lower as most people have served years and learnt their lesson, the issues with re-offending come from the short term sentences who can take 3/4 months at a time, those guys who can accept these small sentences.

braunstoneagle I could help but notice the third line in you've spelt 'prison' wrong. Very ironic considering what you are talking about, made me chuckle

..prisoners need to be doing something really useful to fill their time and keep them really busy, drug companies spend fortunes on testing and discovering new drugs, fortunes that need to be reimbursed, why can't prisoners be paid to do the testing? they are all in the same place which saves travelling costs back and forth for everyone involved, more importantly they can be watched 24 hrs by medical teams who are very keen to see they are looked after properly and to make sure they don't upset the tests, when they are eventually let out they can continue doing the testing knowing they will be able to earn enough money to stop doing the naughty things that got them locked up in the first place, the drugs that are tested are tested more speedily and most importantly a lot cheaper! ...meaning everyone will be able to afford them. Same goes for all athletes.

Simple solution to this. Put all the guards from Southern into the Prison Service. They can open and close doors to their hearts content and health and safety is a winner too. And they get to keep their job. Better than a VIZ top tip Mezzer.
