I've got no issue with the MOBOs but surprisingly neither have the 'misappropriation' moaners, considering all the white people making black music.

Honey G is a fcuking disgrace but only because she's sh1t.

I don't know whether Sascha Baron Cohen got away with it because people hadn't cottoned on to this argument in the '90s, which even retrospectively would seem quite naive as the Black and White Minstrels had been distasteful for decades by that point. I can only assume that it's because he was funny and clever with it, clever enough to have a backstory ready for the character of 'Alistair Graham' if challenged on impersonating someone of another ethnic origin.

I've no idea what your post is actually about, but as an aside, when I was a kid the whole Black and White Minstrel blacking up thing went totally over my head. I never thought about in it those terms. I just knew it was among the most s*** programs I'd ever seen, along with The Good Old Days and The Wheel Tappers And Shunters Club.

I routinely get asked 'where I'm from' I know what people mean by that, but I'm from the UK and am British. When that's my answer I'm asked 'no, where are you from originally?' or 'where are you really from?'. There's that aspect of life to deal with and life is very visual by its nature, there's no getting away from it.

Where you are routinely differentiated, it helps to have outlets where none of that means anything and you can just let your hair down. I'm sure that's the same for lots of groups, racial, disability and list goes on. Like the "good humoured" lesbian thread on here where everyone is laughing it up about words that are used to harm and demean others. Life isn't a freebie pop at whatever group isn't flavour of the month, with no outlet for said groups.

The MOBOs is a fun, positive night for people and genres who had to fight to get their significant artistic ability recognised. Times change and eventually it may be redundant but there are always lots of white people present and performing at the mobos anyway, which is how it should be. It's not some kind of race hate gathering. In a majority white country, being white is, culturaly if not always locally, an unnoticed default, a given. If a person goes out of their way to overly associate with their race when that is the case they are often doing so for different reasons, centering around disliking others rather than celebrating themselves. How many black people get to perform or are present at events celebrating white identity?

Just about every famous black british person goes to the mobos, are we suggesting that they are all incredible racists, or could it be that there is a bit more to it than that?

Not being funny, I come from a Greek background and have olive skin. People ask me this all the time. It's not a rude question, it's genuine intrigue. Genuinely think this battles has pretty much been won, no-one really cares about your skin colour any more in this country. Which is why the MOBOs are a bit outdated and unnecessary.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

It's the Music of Black Origin awards. It isn't exclusively for black people. It represents a strain of music that was under-represented in the mainstream in the past and so the organisers saw a gap in the market.

It is now pretty mainstream stuff but still serves a purpose. The same as there is a Country and Western awards every year. Or a Classical music awards every year.

As has already been said, if the event is open to all as you suggest then why call it MOBO? The name is exclusive in itself and unnecessary. We need to move on from this kind of outmoded divisive stuff if we are to evolve.
I see no justification in 2016 to reference colour in anything. We are all people.

As for your "Where are you from originally?" issues.
I think you need to be a little less sensitive and realise that a large proportion of the population grew up in a country which was 99.9% white. When the majority of the population have lived their lives in a time where a significant number of non white people is the norm then that question will probably disappear.

Joss Stone won it one year, she's about as white as vanilla ice cream

Pretty sure Amy Winehouse has won it as well

Sam Smith bagged four awards.

So the title "MOBO" awards is obsolete then and should be changed.

All music is of black origin strictly speaking and the country awards are not called the white country awards although we all know that country music is almost exclusively made by white people.

Time to change the title.
