What amazes me is how anyone is surprised that if you have free movement of goods, services and capital you then get a surge of poor people following the money.

Free trade and free movement would logically lead to a levelling out of wealth across the world. That's why it's unpopular in the wealthier half of the world. But maybe if free trade worked better for poorer countries it would retain more of its population. I'm paying the same for a pair of trousers now that I did in 1980. There is a price to pay for free trade. But rather than putting up walls we would be better off co-operating to sustain people in their place of birth because no one really finds it easy to abandon everything they're familiar with in order to be an immigrant somewhere else.

As for Turkey, I live in the UK but I follow its news closely. What it has is a leader who is paranoid, sees enemies everywhere, and is constantly falling out with allies and shifting allegiances, the American's are about to find out what that's like unfortunately. But at least they can turf him out in four years time.
