Two people still trapped, around 50 people injured and 'some loss of life', implying more than one person.

East Croydon is very quiet.

Looks like the tram was coming from New Addington/Lloyd Park and as it came out of Sandilands tunnel was going too fast in the slippery conditions and didn't make the left turn. It appears to have jumped the line and carried on towards Bingham Road, on its side.

Addiscombe Road is shut, Lower Addiscombe Road grid locked.

The whole thing brings back memories of Clapham Junction, thank goodness not on the same scale though.

Sad news.

Eight people are feared dead and 50 more have been injured after a tram derailed and overturned in London this morning.
Witnesses said they heard a loud crash at around 6am this morning when the two-carriage tram came off the rails amid torrential rain.
Residents said the vehicle was coming down a bend on a steep slope and 'carried on down the hill rather than turning', with fears it may have been going 'too fast' and tipped over near a tunnel.
Two bodies were removed from the wreckage and three more people are thought to be trapped in the tunnel, with more than 100 emergency services workers at the scene.
One passenger, who sustained a head injury in the crash, said he had heard the driver 'blacked out' after the crash and suggested a 'broken rail' was to blame while a local resident said his wife was on the tram and called him to say she 'couldn't get up or move'.
Police have confirmed the male driver of the tram has been arrested in connection with the incident but refused to give out any more details.

The driver would be arrested as is standard. Doesn't mean anything. I saw something on social media which someone posted two weeks ago on a tram on the same stretch of line that they thought the tram was going to derail as it took the corner so fast so perhaps this is a sad incident which was inevitable at some stage
