Considering this long great sulk by the US and the punitive measures/embargo placed on Cuba for the last 50plus years it sounds like it should be a lot worse. Antigua was a surprise. Third world island once you left the 5 star resorts. Was expecting a bit more parity wealth wise considering the kudos of the island but the locals don't see much investment for the money that is spent there that is obvious.

But I'd be surprised if anyone in the UK who isn't actually homeless would actually be better off. Now if I was Hondurian or Mexican, and not born into a wealthy or middle class family, I'd be better off Cuban.

The death camps less so, but to say people weren't aware isn't true either. They didn't want to know, because they didn't want to believe. What did they really think was happening in the concentration camps? They knew something terrible was going on, they just didn't realise how terrible it was. What worries me, is that everyone seems to forget it wasn't just the Jews that were being murdered on mass. As for Stalin, f**k him, and Lenin and Trotsky, they saw human life as an expendable asset to be used up, and that doing so was fine, provided it served their purposes. Stalin wasn't even killing dissenters, just people who caught his attention. The bloke was a f**king Monster. So how many political dissenters did Castro murder, who hadn't actually committed real crimes? No one seems sure, and the numbers vary dramatically because there is no real consensus on whether they were innocent or guilty. There are plenty of those killed following the revolution and the bay of pigs that were a long way from innocent. But the state also criminally treated homosexuals and black Cubans, along with never moving on from that 'cold war paranoia'. Then again of course the US were quite prolific in their attempts to murder Castro, and to support any anti-Cuban terrorists. Definitely some, and for that Castro can never really be as Corbyn puts it a hero (and politics doesn't produce heroes anyway it produces selfish c**ts of people).

It may also have something to do with Belsen being the same distance from London as Newcastle and add the return journey mileage and there's Auschwitz not far away. The horrifying nature of this Holocaust (there have been others) and its context is, however morbid and discomfiting, enduringly fascinating. Caught a doc about The Sonderkommandos the other day. Very difficult to watch but couldn't look away either.

Pretty much the case for every cheap 'holiday destination in the world'. You don't have to get too far off the tracks to see how the majority live with little to no prospects, no education, welfare or provision in actual squalor, with little or no health provision beyond charities. Cuba, not so much. Its still a s**t hole, everyone is poor, but then they're also fed, sheltered, educated, literate and have access to health care.

Antigua is the complete opposite of cheap if you want a holiday there. Two people? Kiss goodbye to six to eight grand for a fortnight.

They did suck the cock of paymasters, being the USSR and Venezuela. Which was hypocritical because in his early days, Castro rejected the notion that he was a Soviet communist but as soon as the US 'unreasonably' objected to nationalisation of their companies assets, Castro sucked the teet of Moscow, and threatened world peace by allowing scviet missiles on Cuban territory. Still, keep up your misty eyed, Cuban bollocks revisionist history. Whilst you engage in capitalist property speculation.

How long will that stay in the memory and the news I wonder. I doubt there will be too may documentaries about that in the future. Not many Syrians in Hollywood.
