No I haven't.

Cuba - one of the best literacy rates and medical services in the world.

RIP Fidel

I wonder how honest the Cuban government is when it gives the figures to UNESCO. Even if true, that's surely a big price to pay for 50+ years of brutal dictatorship?

By the way, the WHO reckons Cuba is ranked 39th for medical care. Human Rights Watch, I think it is, has been reporting for a long time that access to quality medical care is largely restricted to party members, the elite, and wealthy foreign tourists who bring much needed foreign currency.

If we are to forgive and forget his brutal behavior because the literacy rate is high then, surely, by the same token we should give Batista credit for being in charge of one of the wealthiest countries in the Americas.

Just because Castro was right to oppose Batista (who was equally brutal) and American influence, I am not sure the resulting 57 years of oppression, mass murder, and corruption are justified.

If you come to a fork in the road, take it.

Ha ha. You're special.

I always knew you were a WUM of low intellectual capability. The above confirms this. You are one of those who likes to have a cheap shot but offers no real position, just derision. That's sad, like you come on the internet to get some kicks to give yourself some esteem.

Thanks. I get you.

I would agree with you and suggest that Castro apologists read about the Mariel boat lift, where Castro tried to rid Cuba of 'undesirables'. This included homosexuals.

Castro was no freedom fighter, he was a power hungry sociopath and the lefties hoovered up his drivel on education and healthcare, without examining his record on human rights.

Oh you've hurt my feelings now that's not nice.

"Low intellectual capability"? Really? Even if that is true based on your obvious superiority, the fact that you use it to insult someone tells everyone a lot about you.

And give myself some esteem?! No. It's just entertainment.

"This highly structured, prevention-oriented system has produced positive results. Vaccination rates in Cuba are among the highest in the world. The life expectancy of 78 years from birth is virtually identical to that in the United States. The infant mortality rate in Cuba has fallen from more than 80 per 1000 live births in the 1950s to less than 5 per 1000 — lower than the U.S. rate, although the maternal mortality rate remains well above those in developed countries and is in the middle of the range for Caribbean countries.3,4 Without doubt, the improved health outcomes are largely the result of improvements in nutrition and education, which address the social determinants of health. Cuba's literacy rate is 99%, and health education is part of the mandatory school curriculum. A recent national program to promote acceptance of men who have sex with men was designed in part to reduce rates of sexually transmitted disease and improve acceptance of and adherence to treatment. Cigarettes can no longer be obtained with monthly ration cards, and smoking rates have decreased, though local health teams say it remains difficult to get smokers to quit. Contraception is free and strongly encouraged. Abortion is legal but is seen as a failure of prevention."

Great! Oh, but this is also from the same article: "Any visitor can see that Cuba remains far from a developed country in basic infrastructure such as roads, housing, plumbing, and sanitation."

Sounds wonderful. I suppose that too makes the 57 years of political oppression and mass political murder worth it.

By the way, did you just ignore that too?

Like I said, you are a WUM. You have just admitted to coming on HoL because 'it's just entertainment'.

Thanks.

If we use stats in isolation and ignore the nature of the regime, we would end up here:

In a period of six years, per capital income increased from 643 to 1186 (relative to 1913 prices). Access to things like vacations, health care, good jobs, all improved. The only problem is that this describes Nazi Germany.

Again, we could look at the relative wealth of Cuba under Batista and ignore the brutal nature of his regime. But that would be dishonest, just as it is when looking at Castro.

Can't prove but it did happen - may be ongoing.

Health is part of education there - I think you have a very high life expectancy there nearly 80 for men.

Castro had been ill for over 20 years ok he would have had special treatment.

Cool revolution one nurse just for me wow ...

Its obvious,is it not? Try not looking at my selection through your own bias,perhaps...I said the comparator was other underdeveloped countries not the US or Canada...so,relative to other underdeveloped countries in the region, yes,I do think I highlighted the relevant bit, having set out what I had selected as the correct comparator

ps. Does greater political oppression in many of the generally US-backed underdeveloped countries in the region not even factor into your comparator?
