Its obvious,is it not? Try not looking at my selection through your own bias,perhaps...I said the comparator was other underdeveloped countries not the US or Canada...so,relative to other underdeveloped countries in the region, yes,I do think I highlighted the relevant bit, having set out what I had selected as the correct comparator

So, what you are arguing is that because he improved healthcare and education (and I don't doubt he did), that absolves almost 60 years of political oppression, the mass murder of his political opponents, and the massive economic decline of a country that was once one of the richest in Central and South America. And you are accusing me of examining this through my own biases? I thought I made it clear that Batista was brutal, and it was right that he was removed. I'm not the one defending a brutal mass murdering dictator's record. Quite the opposite, I am condemning the behavior of both political camps.

I'm arguing that overall Castro was a very positive thing for Cuba...notwithstanding criticisms (many of them completely valid), relative to other underdeveloped countries in the region.(being the appropriate comparator) and unceasing US efforts to f... up its economy for more than 50 years...

One of the richest countries in the region? True for a small minority....who now mainly reside in Miami Fla, but overall,no way?

As the US PBS TV puts it:

"There were, however, profound inequalities in Cuban society -- between city and countryside and between whites and blacks. In the countryside, some Cubans lived in abysmal poverty. Sugar production was seasonal, and the macheteros -- sugarcane cutters who only worked four months out of the year -- were an army of unemployed, perpetually in debt and living on the margins of survival. Many poor peasants were seriously malnourished and hungry. Neither health care nor education reached those rural Cubans at the bottom of society. Illiteracy was widespread, and those lucky enough to attend school seldom made it past the first or second grades. Clusters of graveyards dotted the main highway along the foothills of the Sierra Maestra, marking the spots where people died waiting for transportation to the nearest hospitals and clinics in Santiago de Cuba.

Racism also blighted Cuban society. The island's private clubs and beaches were segregated. Even President Fulgencio Batista, a mulatto, was denied membership in one of Havana's most exclusive clubs. "One might best summarize the complex situation by saying that urban Cuba had come to resemble a Southern European country (with a living standard as high or surpassing that of France, Spain, Portugal and Greece) while rural Cuba replicated the conditions of other plantation societies in Latin America and the Caribbean," according to analyst Mark Falcoff.

Cuba's social problems were compounded by a violent, chaotic and corrupt political history..."

So,no I don't buy into the Castro was no better or worse than Batista school of thought,I'm afraid...

For prehaps the first time ever I agree with Hoof Hearted here.

Castro and Che Guevara ruined that country and the peoples lives in it. People like Corbyn and Livingstone who have praised him are utterly wrong and have probably never been to Cuba.

When the revolution took place they were very young men in a post war world seeking equality - but they thought it was acceptable to kill people to achieve those aims. There were many others seeking a peaceful revolution instead.

They use teaching people to read and training up doctors to distract bleeding heart liberals in the outside world to distract them from the face that the average wage is $20 a month, but that is skewed by a few people who make western wages so the average person is on much less. Their is a media blackout, more police per head than almost anywhere in the world, the government take 80% of any farmers produce, and there are neighbourhood watch organisations who report people if they might be having counter revolutionary ideas.

Idealistically, they are confused. Instead of creating equality for all they have just stopped anyone from being rich (except the likes of Hemmingway) and just put everyone into absolute poverty..... but at least they can read the government controlled media.

Cuba has the best health and education for the poor in the Americas (apart from Canada). He had his faults but his achievements have been great.

The bloke was an arsehole.

Bankrupted his country causing misery to all his countrymen, bumped off anyone opposing his view after torturing them.... and as you say Dermot, was prepared to help Russia obliterate the world with nuclear missiles.

Yet the BBC give him a News obituary like he was the messiah.

I don't know much about their education system, but it is praised by both the UN economic forums such as the world bank.

As for healthcare, it has long been reported, by groups like Human Rights Watch, that the poor don't get effective health care in Cuba, and the pat they are largely excluded from top quality care. Only the elites, party members, and rich foreigners get good quality care.

I suppose that was worth the thousands of political murders, disappearances, jailings, and the exiling of political opponents, homosexuals, etc. at least those remains can read, and some can get health care. That makes it all ok, right?

My Cuban-American friend will be celebrating this. She knows what the old and new regime is like to live under, with much of her family still there.

For the lefties on here to find any good things to say about the man from the comfort of their homes in England is quite frankly a disgrace.

Do agree with you - and Trumps arrival - it was ok with Obama easing in changes not revenge.

Is this the end of every topic more than a greased-up swim away from these shores then?

Just for the record

Great beaches, great weather, great cigars, great looking women,...cheap place to go.Love Havana, the old cars and the Tropicana Club.

What the politics in that country are ... I haven't got the faintest, frankly I don't really care.
