Quite agree but then they would be losing copious amounts of money, which comes before safety (whatever our HOL colleagues claim).

Salary: £45,734 Once Qualified as per Southern

That's a pittance how on earth can they afford a weekly case of Cristal? It would only leave circa £5,000 for the rest of your basic needs like the Beluga caviar.

Yep. Train drivers are in the top 10% of wage earners. It was difficult to get them to work overtime.
As posted on this site on 7/1/17. I think yours quoted salary is underestimated

I stand corrected but I am not so ignorant to realise this is not just about safety, it is a politically motivated attack on the Government

ASLEF have had the same stance against extension of DOO when we had a labour government.

Train drivers earn 50k+
But that has nothing to do with this dispute, ASLEF have always been against losing guards on southern/South Central/Connex. Even when we had a labour government.

Train drivers are highly trained, and in demand... this means their wages reflect this.

For a TOC to cancel a peak time train on a busy commuter route, can cost over 10k. A driver can earn his company the equivalent of his yearly salary in one day.

The money quoted earlier was what has been advertised on their website for new drivers, you'd think one the managers would have told you before releasing the job advert.

Exactly. If they were that bothered about safety, they'd down tools and not return until the matter was resolved.

This point gets ignored by pro-strike / pro-union posters.
I mean they're on pretty good salaries and it would force the issue and also really demonstrate that their obvious principles are absolutely clear and non negotiable with regards to safety. However making it a lot more unsafe on strike days and knowingly increasing the burden and prosecution risk for their Thameslink colleagues smacks of a slight touch of hypocrisy to me.

You asked if there was any evidence. There is. You don't have to believe the evidence (as I intimated, I don't fully believe it), but it exists.

I stand by what I said, the idea that losing half a month's pay doesn't hurt someone is farcical. They might be voting to strike for reasons other than safety, but they aren't going to be going on prolonged personally costly strikes just to give the government a bloody nose.

Edited! I promised myself I would not be dragged back into this cyclical debate.

Interesting release from the RMT.

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said;
“As with the Southern contract, the government is inserting clauses into new franchise agreements which will mean the tax payer will bankroll Teresa May’s war on the unions.

“It is absolutely scandalous that the public purse will be footing the bill for any industrial action taken against private rail companies. We also now know that that at the same time rail bosses are going to make over £1 billion implementing the government’s policy of getting rid of guards.

“It is clear that the Southern and other disputes are nothing to do with modernising our railway and everything to do with old fashioned union busting and cost cutting.”

Its pretty scandalous that the Helmet46 purse is being used to foot the bill for my increased costs in ensuring that I don't lose my job because of strike action.(Hotels, Taxis etc). Might send an expenses claim to the RMT and Aslef.
I may actually cost the public purse more as when I lose my job, because of Southern and the Unions, I will claim benefits (which the free legal advise given by my union membership should help me secure). Everyones a winner. (Oh, except the commuter who is even more unsafe than ever before, in this strike about safety. Oh and the taxpayer. Oh and the country as its costing a bomb. Oh and a lot of Companies as they can't trade without employees).

Drivers earn 46k for first year, then after a years service it jumps to 49k a year, plus they get paid extra for working Sundays, they're contracted to do 17 a year. Thus pushing their salary over 50k.
