New Style v Old Style of play

For me, one of the biggest fallacies in football is that playing passing, possession based football is "the right way" to play...and is necessary if you want to be successful.

For me, I actually preferred the old style of containing teams then breaking quickly on the attack. That was quite exciting to watch and results wise, far more effective. For me, the only reason that style wasn't working was that we didn't have the striker to make it work properly. We now have so what's the harm in giving it a go? Totally with you on all of this.

No. We were highly effective when we defended well and got results, both under Pulis and the first year under Pardew. Getting quality strikers and improving the ball up to them should be adding to that, not replacing it. You don't knock down your ground floor in order to build a loft conversion.

Attractive football is the icing on the cake and right now, we don’t have a f*cking cake. We don’t pass the ball well, it’s not easy on the eye and we’re scoring more goals by sacrificing the basics. It's easy to forget that when Pardew was at Reading and in his early days at West Ham he was very route one - remember Briane Deane coming on late in the play off final and the ball continuously launched towards his head from their half? Bit like Holloway he's left route one behind and gone more 'continental' and fallen in love with tactics and big ideas - at times he'd be better off returning to his pragmatic approach, as we've seen lately. He'll play it tight and try and nick a win at Watford. Kevin Day was very scathing of Pardew on Hawkbee and Jacobs the other day - said his recent thumbs up to SP was more embarrassing than the cup final dance, and bringing off Jimmy Mac before United scored didn't impress him either. His words are normally couched more subtly, he reckons there's about three fans left who are pro-Pardew, slight under-estimate.

Interesting- for me, we've been told that to progress we need to play a certain way but I don't believe that's true. Looking at last year, Leicester did the complete opposite and stuck to quick counter attacking football and won the league! And Chelsea are now doing the same!
