It's a strange one. Must be indication that Allardyce wants 4 at the back and not go with the 3-5-2 of the Everton game. Because we probably wouldn't be signing PVA otherwise and also the 3-5-2 doesn't accommodate wingers and most importantly Wilf.

Therefore looks like a 4-4-2 or a 4-2-3-1 with left side being PVA and Schlupp.

The most important positions to fill in my opinion are RB and CB. Ward (sadly) isn't good enough and neither is Delaney and probably Tomkins (but perhaps we'll see with him).

Shame we didn't go all out for Fonte. Him and Dann would have been a great pairing and Fonte is also a leader which we are lacking currently too.

I do think with Schlupp & PVA it looks like a solid, overlapping and quick left side.

You don't think LB is a priority? Wow. I hope you're talking after signing Schlupp and VanA or opticians do deals on eyesight tests in January.

SA has worked with Tomkins at West Ham so will have a better idea with him than feet up on the desk/texting skirt on the phone during training super Al.

He could also go with a 3-4-3 formation ( a very risky formation) with Van Aanholt and Schlupp on the left and Ward/whoever and Zaha on the right.

If Schlupp is not good on the left wing, then we could always try remy there, has good pace and can score a goal and then have Schlupp/Van Aanholt as a sub

More news on paddy ......Ed Aarons Ed Aarons
Patrick van Aanholt update! This is the latest on what seems like quite an expensive acquisition (if you ask me).

Crystal Palace have agreed personal terms with Patrick van Aanholt over his proposed move to Selhurst Park for an initial £9m, with the Dutchman now set for a medical. Sam Allardyce has been keen to recruit a new left-back and held discussions with former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra as well as making a £7m bid for Leeds’ Charlie Taylor. But having worked with Van Aanholt at Sunderland, Allardyce has now settled on the 26-year-old former Chelsea player, who has made 20 appearances this season, scoring three goals. The move, which could eventually rise to £12m with bonuses, could be complicated by the fact he was withdrawn from Sunderland’s starting XI just 15 minutes before kick-off against Tottenham in September due to a heart scare, despite the fact he was later cleared by extra tests.

This guy is awful and Sunderland fans are not to disheartened he is going. Surely if he was any good, they wouldn't be offering to drive him to our club. For the odd goal and assist he is a complete liability at the back. Complete waste of money and I look forward to the first 'Patrick Van Aanholt PALACE TALK' thread where we slag him off and offer to drive him to the next overpaying club!

Based on the fact that most Sunderland fans only ever watch 1/2-3/4 of a game I'm not sure they're best qualified to comment.

the dignified don't even enter in the game

Well I am talking now yes, and Schlupp has already been signed. So yes. RB and CB priority now.

I think Schlupp may be intended for a more advanced position. With Zaha still away, he may well have to play there for the time-being.

So has this happened yet? Or is it another cliff-hanger than will end in disappointment, like Jenkinson?

Forgot about this I hope it won't be a problem ....Van Aanholt has already agreed a contract with Palace, but the 26-year-old will undergo a lengthy and detailed medical after suffering a heart scare earlier this season.

Sunderland were forced to take Van Aanholt out of their team to face Tottenham Hotspur in September following a routine heart test and advice from the Football Association, but the player has since proved his fitness so Palace do not anticipate any problems.

I first noticed PAV when we won 3-1 up there. He had a bit of a running niggle with Wilf throughout the game.I thought he got the better of Wilf that day and towards the end he was a major threat either creating or scoring the consolation goal.As part of a defence that let in 3 goals (Bolasie 3) I have wondered how he looked good but the defence was s@@t.

whenever we play sunderland him vs zaha is a good battle. correct me if i'm wrong but i feel like he usually gets the better of the duel, with zaha often switching flanks with no luck down the right
