They're fit by normal standard. Extremely fit. But premier league football is a game of fine margins. If you're coming up against much fitter players then it's going to have a telling effect on your performance levels compared to the opponent. Not an excuse as such. Just common sense.

Not sure about all of them but Cabaye, not for the first time, certainly looked as if his legs had gone completely when he was subbed.

Was an auto correct indeed. Info comes from a friend who is mates with a former player who is heavily involved in the game still. "Apparently" is added because I haven't heard big Sam say that himself. Not worth sharing stuff that you hear on here sometimes.

Thanks. That puts the comments about fitness into some sort of context.

But you would have to fit your personal fitness regime into the squad training regime. If you're expected to spend your whole pre-season grandstanding around America in showy events you're going to spend less time in the gym. Oh, and presumably you're going to make use of the club's fitness coach, who may or may not be s***e.

By my reckoning we would have 22 points and be 15th... and with a healthy gap to the relegation spots. There wouldn't have been so many consecutive losses either.

To be absolutely fair, it's a small sample size and very possible we were unlucky in a handful of games, creating a negative points swing.

But in my mind, we have struggled throughout the season to maintain intensity. Games became loose and broken toward the ends of halves and we frequently dropped deep to try and hang on.

Hopefully Allardyce can get our fitness right up very quickly -- a big ask in the depths of winter when he also has to re-teach the team basic defending.

The lead thread makes a very valid and salient point. It's a "domino effect" and I appreciate the time thought and effort in the match result calculations.
The domino effect is lack of fitness which equals eventual mental fatigue which leads to lack of concentration and ultimately cascades into bad mistakes, lack of confidence and poor decision making. We end up passing the ball backwards, sideways and without positive and intelligent direction. It's highly likely that the lack of fitness has (and is) been/being corrected and we will see improvements against Sunderland and Boro.

To the chap who mentioned Cabaye, I've seen a lot of posts about him being lazy when not on the ball/unfit.

His legs may be gone when he's subbed off around 70 but the man covers a lot of ground. He always shows for the ball which is telling. Only him and McCarthur really do this.

He will often sprint back and block a cross or fill in for an out of position full-back (usually Kelly) and I think the reason we don't see the best of Cabaye is because we ask him to do everything in midfield.

If he felt comfortable with his 2 other midfielders that they'd show for the ball deep and play it forward rather than sideways I think he'd setup and score a lot more as well as look a lot fitter and last a 90 minutes.

It must be hugely frustrating to be one of the best players in the team and have people not on your level. I think Cabaye handles this the right way and over-compensates as opposed to Benteke, who stands there and gets frustrated when he's not found by lesser players. If he knows his team-mates aren't up to it he should move more like Cabaye. Hence he can always last 90 minutes.

We have watched Palace come to life around the middle of the second half. It was interesting to see Schlopp keeping himself out of danger, as did Benteke (spending considerable time playing on the left wing and feeding Remy. When Townsend came on, Benteke seemed to go up a gear. Could it be that our players get considerable abuse from opponents (sadly Cabaye & Zaha will seem to lose it (suddenly giving as good as they have been getting) and there is a need to use the team's ball playing skills to keep out of danger. I am happy with back passes, provided it moves the opposing defence away from their goal. Playing a more intense style will require good fitness. COYP

Might well be. How pointless is your life then? (Secretly I'm already wondering if I can create a measurement system to give a definitive response). I love to try and measure the unmeasurable or at least to add context for the bollox people spout.

Quite possibly the problem isn't so much physical fitness but a problem with concentration levels as many of the late goals that we have conceded are more to do with players dozing

A good point, but a drop in concentration levels can be linked to your fitness and well being. Our minds wander a bit towards the end of the work day when we are tired. I know mine does.
