No chance. He's a poor man's Tom huddlestone. Can ping a pass, hits the odd good shot, but can hardly run, doesn't defend and have you seen him try to track back? It's frightening.

We need to be solid. People want us to be a pulis like team, then want players like this at the same time. You can't have both.

I guarantee if we signed him he'd be getting stick in a few weeks for not running around enough!!

I did say "Sort of player", not suggesting we should go in for him ! He has many of the attributes that we need in that vital "Engine room" but I accept that there are negatives to his game.

We need someone in the middle of the park and Shelvey has some of those attributes. Pass, Strenght and Stamina are key.

For me a deep lying midfielder is what is missing, and has been for some time.

Yeah, just the sort of player we need.

Drop a racist in the middle of the Park and watch the goals fly in.

The type for sure but not him gets into to much trouble on the pitch also did not help Newcastle avoid relegation.

Jonjo Shelvey has the technical quality of Jason Puncheon, maybe even slightly a little bit better, but he's also slower

I don't. Too much whingeing after we get mid-table. You remember? "Yeah, we won, but that was dull", "Why do we sit back so much? We need to get more possession!", etc&etc.

Systematically dragged down by the lawmakers

Shelvey is a far more accomplished midfielder than Puncheon who in all honesty has been a real disappointment this season.

Whilst this is a non-starter at the moment because the Newcastle team is built around him I agree with the OP.

Our team is currently short of a holding midfielder, qualify on the ball, and we also lack a bit of nastiness in the team. Which, dispute his disciplinary record, is why I'd also go for Mitrovic.

He seems to sit back a bit and dictate the play for Newcastle and dispite his reported lack of pace he seems to be a real workhorse this season.

Because of the way he looks, everyone wants him to be a bad guy, but his hairloss is medical and the recent alleged racism incident centered around that. No one is really sure what was said, but he's certainly not on the scale of Terry and Sourez.

Do you think Shelvey would do better he did not do well in Newcastles poor run that ended with relegation. Punchoen is more skilful and less of a liability IMO.

Anyone thinking that Shelvey is what we need should seek medical help immediately.

In my humble estimation Shelvey is a much more accomplished player than Puncheon and yes he would be an upgrade on "Punch".
