Not forgetting the current plight of Christian minorities being slaughtered right now in the Middle east. Then of course the Armenians back in the early part of the 20th Century...

Hrolf the Ganger and Kermit you are right - lets get our own memorial going

5.93 million jews
2-3 million Soviet POWs
1.8-2 million ethnic poles
300,000 500,000 poles
270,000 disabled people
90,000-220,000 Romani Gypsies
5,000-15,000 homosexuals
2,500-5,000 Jehovah's Witnesses
7,000 Spanish Republicans

All slaughtered by Fascism.

Tasmanian aboriginals
The Murder of Jews in York – (1190ad)
Native Americans wiped out by immigrants to America;
The Cambodian killed by the Khmer Rouge (who were then, after the Vietnamese stepped in to rescue then, supported by the UK and the USA to kill even more Cambodians;
The victims of Stalin,
The victims of Suharto in Indonesia,
Pinochet in Chile
The Armenian Genocide
The Christian minorities being slaughtered (2013-?)
Palestinians murdered in 1948 when the Israeli settlers drove the more fortunate Palestinians from their homes. The last is a slow burning genocide; But slowly, slowly the state if Israel is getting there.

Holocaust Day is supposed to remember every genocide and not only the Jewish one but, reasonably, that does get the most attention because of the specifics and sheer numbers.

I only found out recently the Germans had a dry run 40 years earlier with a mass killing of a specific tribe in South West Africa (their colony) when Hitler was only 11. wtf?

I thought the genocide of the Herero and Nama was well known? I am surprised, that is all. You always seem pretty well read.

I think the day was chosen as it is a specific date that can be remembered. After all, the mass killings all took place over time.

Not just Christians all faiths. Groups like IS have no love for non sunni Muslims either. The great failure of humanity is that there are always people taken in by the idea that 'other people' are to blame. Whether its racial, gender based, sectarian, sexual orientation or other imagined nonsense we as a species embrace division by prejudice of difference over unity vbvby similarities because its always easier to blame others and than address our own failings and insecurities that make us easy to manipulate and control.

We are all both the guard at the prison camp and the prisoner.

Maybe a blinked view of history is your thing. Each to their own. Its the age of alternative facts after all

Hitler was indeed responsible for the holocaust (unless you are one of those oddball holocaust deniers?).... but I'm sure I've seen a documentary somewhere that showed Stalin was responsible for the slaughter of millions of Poles and managed to get the Nazis to get the blame for it?

Anyway... Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, etc... whoever it was .... let's put that to one side and remember those jews and other poor unfortunates that lived life in abject misery and were then murdered systematically and callously in the death camps.

Very true jamie.

I would add one more atrocity to the list.... the slaughter and persecution of the Tamils in Sri Lanka

Be very careful about casually bandying about the word 'genocide".It devalues something particularly grotesque.

The holocaust against Jews and Roma? Genocide

The Spanish against indigenous peoples in Central and South America:Genocide

Us/America against the indigenous peoples of N America:Genocide.

Us in Australia and Tasmania:Genocide

The fascist Croatian regime against Serbs and Jews 1941-45:Genocide.

Franco, Pinochet,Israel,Indonesia, China in Tibet...brutal oppression,sure..but genocide no.

Mao Tse-tung , Communist hero still honoured in China and revered by sections of the left, was responsible for 50-75 million deaths - about 5 times the number you list killed by the Fascists. Both ideologies are evil and need to be fought. It doesn't help that the left somehow think that death by Fascism is more reprehensible than death by Communism.

Chaps.... stop bickering... as I said earlier it doesn't matter who or what is/was responsible.

Sadly it is in our nature, as it is in animals and plants.

We are no different to the grey/red squirrels or the oak/beech trees.... we all want our genes to be the dominant ones.

Let's remember the dead of all genocide, and specifically those of the concentration camps in WW2 as well as Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur which holocaust memorial day was set up to represent.

Shame some need to make it left v right when all you need is evil.
