I will answer that nick,yes I would try and send my family to safety.
And then I would stay and fight for my country.
But then I have often wondered why it's mainly fit young men who are the refugees.
Where are their families?.

It's ironic that those who espouse capitalism's tenet of survival of the fittest complain when the fittest reach our shores.

It's about 62% men (doesn't say how many are fit and young) - 22% children and 16% women that have entered europe (up to Nov 2015)according to time magazine.

Elsewhere around the world, the gender split of refugees is roughly 50/50 (a bit like the eu referendum)

Could it be that newspapers and websites may have been rather selective with their pictures to give you the impression and deliberately help create a false narrative to make people froth a bit more?

Is that the west including the USA whose president only this week said he's not getting involved?

Should the fit young men, who may or may not have weapons, hang about hoping that the military advisers know their plight.

I remember my Dad and Grandmother (my Grandad died before I was born) telling me stories of the SA (the storm troops) terrorising people on the streets. Of course, Nuremberg was one of the most "Nazi" cities in Germany, what with the party rallies and Julius Streicher. My cousin was one of the few in those days who tried to stand up to them. Once Dachau was opened in March, 1933, he was sent there and a month after his arrival was executed. To illustrate an attitude which was common, his own sister said he should have kept his mouth shut. The Nazis did a very good job of cowing the public at large through threats, intimidation and propaganda. Many did throw up their hands and said there was nothing they could do. Many had that literally beaten into them. A next door neighbor had been friendly. All of a sudden he disappeared for a fortnight. When he returned from wherever he was sent he had a badly bruised face and would stay as far away my family as he could.

We say now what should have happened. Back then, as it was happening, given the conditions at that time (mass unemployment, hyper-inflation and starvation), people were thinking of survival. Even German Jews felt things had to change and there were some, like my grandfather's eldest brother, who supported the Nazis financially. These were not rational times and we need to remember not only the numbers of those who were murdered but why it became possible for this mass murder to happen. My family traced itself back to 1452 in Germany. Why I'm not German born, supporting FC Nuremberg, taking my place in the family business, is a very tiny part of the tremendous upheaval that is represented by the Nazi Holocaust.

In a very real sense, the Nazi Holocaust made me who I am. There are millions more like me, the so-called post-Holocaust generation. It affects who we think, how we interact with society and even our attitude towards religion. It is very hard to explain, which is probably why I've been seeing a therapist for 20 years.
