Spot on.The crucial period IMO was the "desensitisation" from 1933 (and actually even earlier) -39...with salient lessons for us today in a world full of uncertainties and potential crises around every corner.

Nice post kenbarr.

This campaign is getting a lot of news coverage in Poland right now [Link]

German media referring to the Nazi concentration camps in Poland as 'Polish' concentration camps. Am on holiday in Poland now and it's something the Poles feel very passionately about - that the camps are called what they were and who they were run by.

Interesting and a very fair point.

However, unfortunately there are still many in Poland who lack the ability to also look within, for examplethe denial (and hostility towards those who try to expose the reality) of the massacre (burning alive) by Poles of Jews in Jedwabne in 1941.

For anyone interested,Anna Bikont's book "the Crime and the Silence" is well worth reading

[Link]

In many places in Poland (and elsewhere in Europe) when the Jews were dragged off by the Nazis, their Christian former neighbours very quickly moved into their homes etc. After the war,it was not at all unheard of for the surviving remnant straggling back "home" to face violence as a way of deterring them from trying to gets their property back...they felt no choice but to go elsewhere

For a recent modern day take (and illustration of the horrors that can ensue when people begin to demonise migrants and muslims per se):

"(AFP) WARSAW — Poland has seen a rise in anti-Semitism over the last two years, partly fueled by Europe’s migrant crisis, according to a study released on Tuesday.
The University of Warsaw’s Center for Research on Prejudice found acceptance for anti-Semitic hate speech — especially among young Poles on the internet — rose from 2014 to 2016 compared to previous years.

Their study was based on a sample of 1,000 adults and 700 youths. The number of surveyed Poles who declared positive attitudes towards Jews dropped from 28 percent in 2015 to 23% in 2016.

Researchers attribute the increase to a spike in Islamophobia and anti-migrant sentiment triggered by Europe’s worst migrant crisis since World War II. Many of the migrants were from conflict-ridden countries like Syria and Libya.

Politicians in eastern EU states, notably Poland’s populist leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski, were quick to raise the specter of Islamic State militants carrying out terror attacks once inside the bloc.

Very few refugees or migrants arrived in Poland after Kaczynski’s governing Law and Justice (PiS) party refused them entry.

Yet, the Warsaw University researchers concluded that “fear of Muslims that arose between 2014 and 2016 has increased negative feelings towards Jews among people regardless of their age or political affiliation.”

The study found that 37% of those surveyed voiced negative attitudes towards Jews in 2016 compared to 32% the previous year.

Fifty-six percent said they would not accept a Jewish person in their family, an increase of nearly 10 points compared to 2014.

Nearly a third (32%) said they did not want Jewish neighbors, compared to 27% in 2014.

The Jewish community in Poland, with a population of 38 million, has fewer than 10,000 people.

Prior to the Holocaust, it boasted 3.3 million members, or around 10% of the Polish population. Up to 300,000 Polish Jews survived the war, but most then fled the country, many to Israel.

Around 11% of adults and 24% of younger Poles admitted to making occasional anti-Semitic remarks."

Who decides what are 'far-right politics' - you presumably? Also, isn't 'by whatever means' a bit fascist and far-right?

Not at all. You and I know the best way to deal with a violent bully is to get in there first and break his jaw. Or would you rather cuddle him?

Societies generally come to a broad consensus on what different labels mean.

You could say far right politics is when a leading person in the US government is the founder of breitbart. Purported to have neo Nazi links thru the alt right. The same person that pretty much lied in front of the watching world.

I'm sure you know this but everyone uses exaggerated language when having political handbags on line.
I'm sure that in the real world most people are more moderate and somewhat more sympathetic to other view points.
There are some zealots around, judging by what you read by others, but I'm sure they are in the minority. Some people have personal reasons to have strong views and we must cut some slack on occasion.
Labels just create a common framework for people to understand so we all know what we are talking about.

Perhaps you could elaborate on 'by whatever means'?

I just did. Use your imagination as I can't make it any plainer.

Did you? You said something about breaking jaws of bullies. Would that apply to far-left bullies too or just far-right?
