I'm aware of the height handicap. However, Spanish sides with 5'6'' fullbacks almost always kick the English sides' butts in Europe. So, jumping to high balls is not all there is important. Taming the ball while smoothly passing is. I still remember the 4-0 trashing of Chelsea by Atletico when Atletico wasn't even a Champions League team.
