Just been reading where are they now and it states that John I should now 66. Don't think that can be right as it would mean he started playing for Palace at 13 and left when he was 21.

Maybe 76.

John David Sewell (Shovel) born Brockley 7th July, 1938 signed for Palace 25th October, 1963 from Charlton Athletic was transferred to Orient 5th August 1971.

Details taken from the book "Crystal Palace a Complete record 1905-1989" written by Mike Purkiss with the Reverend Nigel Sands.

That would indicate him to be 79 this coming July ... 6 weeks older than myself!

I think he's resided on the other side of the pond for many years now.
He occasionally turned up at the jazz club that my parents attended in Sidcup.
I seem to recall his sister owning a craft/wool shop by Hither Green station many years ago.
Always remember that goal against Leeds circa 71 when Gary Sprake let the ball slip through his hands

A true Palace legend, apparently very dapper off the pitch and known as "The Count" by the other players (or something like that).
I always remember going to Old Trafford in I think 69/70. It was George Best's return from suspension in front of 66,000. Man Utd absolutely hammered us in the first half and some how went in only one nil up. Second half we continued to hang on until about 10 minutes from the end when against the run of play Cliff Jackson going nowhere in the area got flattened and we got a penalty. Up stepped skipper John Sewell, Stepney in the United goal went the wrong way and the ball bobbled along the ground about 5 times for 1-1. Needless to say a very interesting walk back to the coaches! but a great day.
I think he eventually joined the exodus to Leyton Orient along with a few others under George Petchy.
