Mental health disorders and afflictions I think are almost impossible for people to understand properly, unless you've been there. The experience of not being about to have control over your 'self' is probably alien to most people, let alone to the degree that your self is the cause of your suffering.

Addicts and the familys of addict suffer terribly, but it probably is, whilst their drinking or using, easier for the addict than those around them. The same however isn't true when you get clean.
