I recall first meeting Wenger in Southampton, many, many years ago when my wife and I were staying in the same hotel as him and his team.

He was a perfect gentleman, a real man of erudition with decency oozing from every pore and I was privileged to be in his company.

My view of what will happen. The fans and press will keep on about Wenger being 'past it' and having done all he can, and they'll end up appointing a new manager.

Arsenal will fail to qualify for the champions league, under the next manager, who will be sacked, and replaced.

The new manager will fail to even make the European cup places. Arsenal will spend 5-10 years being the next Liverpool.

Fans will blame everyone else, as will the media, but they'll forget their role in actually f**king their own clubs achievements in the arse simply because other clubs do better.

A club on a par with Everton or Spurs really in terms of size and prospects, largely punching higher because they have an excellent manager with a talent for getting good players in young, and income from the champions league (and thus a high international profile that lets them also attract players who otherwise might be playing elsewhere).

Without that profile, Wenger and champions league football - they'd never have Sanchez or Giroud etc.

I agree with alot of that. What i'd ask a Gooner is who would replace him? You're not just replacing a manager but a whole footballing system built around his philosophy. Do you get a completely different person or someone of a similar ilk and simply pass the baton? There certainly isn't an obvious candidate out there

Be careful what you wish for Blud !!

He's had the safest job in football for decades but the fact of the matter is he's won no major trophy in years either.
A club of that size should expect more than a Champions League place and the odd domestic cup now and then.

It is interesting but in his early days at Arsenal he had players like Vieira, Petit etc and they were a team that would stand up to you physically and got in the faces of opponents.Complete contrast to the squads he has had in recent seasons where physicality has given way to nimble technical players.

I personally think he's a vastly overrated manager.
Season after season he doesn't strengthen their squad when it's obvious to all where they need it.
Good!

You don't last at Arsenal for 21 years unless you are a top manager.

As for squad strengthening, with Arsenal spending a great deal on the 'Emirates' perhaps the club never had the financial clout in the 'Transfer Market' that he would have liked over a period of years.

Actually, I don't think you last at Arsenal for 21 years unless you're well in with the board.
Their trophy cabinet confirms that.

Totally disagree that Wenger has remained at Arsenal solely because he is/has been chums with the 'Board'.Hogwash !

In actual fact the 'Board' have changed dramatically since he joined - Peter Hill-Wood is no longer Chairman, Chips Keswick took over from him, former Managing Director Keith Edelman has left, David Dein who was close to Wenger has gone and Chief Exec Ivan Gazidis has only been in situ for about 7 years.

I suspect that the two main shareholders are interested in divis as much as trophies - and are therefore quite happy.

I very much suspect that Wenger will leave at the end of the season and that Arsenal are already looking at potential replacements.

Suspect there will also be a vacancy at Barcelona so Arsenal and 'Barca' may well be looking at the same people.
