Yeah, some of it has to be...string theory, loop quantum gravity there are a lot of theories waiting for a method of testing.

There is a far amount of mathematics behind these theories which give them some validity so I wouldn't say it is guessing.

It's trying to fit observation to an explanation. Without people doing this kind of thing we wouldn't live in the modern world.

We need theoretical physics to enable humanity to progress as a species. If we don't eventually get off this rock we are doomed to eventually die on it.

Some may be satisfied with the idea that it doesn't matter as they are personally going to exist forever in some palace, eating wonderful no calorie cake whilst being in permanent ecstasy from the experience of being with God.

For the rest of us, I'm sure they are somewhat happy that some of the brightest amongst us are actively trying to progress life down here on the ground....without us having to sing songs at them.

I wasn't trying to dis' science,I love it. I was just trying to be realistic. It's theoretical science's job to push the boundaries and scientists are employed to make it happen. They have a pressure on them to come up with new theories. We must judge their output accordingly.

Then I can only agree with you.

I only wish I had been born bright enough to have been one of them.

Its very important, especially for scientists, to try to remember they're building models of the universe and phenomena. A lot of hard science types missed the revolution of post-modernism, observer bias, and the impact of concepts such as chaos and the revolution in applied sciences over theoretical).

They also tend to see the paradims of their science as universal, rather than defining the limitations. A lot of biologists will point at evidence from neuroscience as being the same as behaviour, because they forget that biology doesn't deal with individuals, but species groups.

The map is not the territory and all that jazz. That said, its also important to distinguish that these models are based on fact, they just not the complete story, outside of the scientific paradigm.
