No, I'll be saying, "I was wrong, forgive me"

When second coming came out I thought it wasn't a patch on the stone roses first album.

Also, I'm looking forward to the day when more religious people are willing to describe what they believe as 'theoretical religion'.

I do. The trouble is that theoretical physics is not much better than guessing.

If we ever had gods, they were almost certainly aliens.
I'm not grovelling to ET.

If 'gods' exist, my guess would be 'its a lot more complex and odd' than anyone 2000-6000 years ago could comprehend, something like the manifestation of combined human consciousness from a higher dimension - or somekind of very advanced, hyperdimension entity (or alien) in which case, I'll just be impressed and have a long list of questions.

Thanks to maths. I think part of the problem is that the likes of you, and me, and everyman, don't really have the capacity to understand mathematics of that level.

As such a certain amount of faith is required that its not just all some kind of strange sorcery and occult conspiracy.... but I think that's reasonable faith. Just because I don't understand things like cutting edge topological and cosmological mathematics, doesn't mean its the same as religion.

Possibly because I can understand theology and philosophy though. It worries me when people, not you because you haven't, who don't understand something, just dismiss it as 'nonsense'.

Kind of like how people who don't understand evolution, seem to think they can 'debunk it' by redefining it as something it isn't.

I don't think it's easy to speculate about the nature of extra terrestrials. They are out there somewhere and there could be all sorts. They might have been our gods and they may or may not be vastly superior in technology. My experience leads me to believe that they have been here already but on this subject, anything is possible.

I agree to a degree. Ignorance is not an excuse to dismiss the process and science cannot be compared to religion in anything other than a flippant context.
Advanced maths is beyond most of us and we must rely on those most qualified to push the boundaries of understanding. Their educated 'guess' is better than someone else's, but when your theories are based on a theory, based on a theory, it does stretch reason and logic to breaking point.
I think we have to keep an open mind about the capacity of current science and the human mind to search beyond the veil and remember that scientists like to be in a job and get grants.

Yeah, some of it has to be...string theory, loop quantum gravity there are a lot of theories waiting for a method of testing.

There is a far amount of mathematics behind these theories which give them some validity so I wouldn't say it is guessing.

It's trying to fit observation to an explanation. Without people doing this kind of thing we wouldn't live in the modern world.

We need theoretical physics to enable humanity to progress as a species. If we don't eventually get off this rock we are doomed to eventually die on it.

Some may be satisfied with the idea that it doesn't matter as they are personally going to exist forever in some palace, eating wonderful no calorie cake whilst being in permanent ecstasy from the experience of being with God.

For the rest of us, I'm sure they are somewhat happy that some of the brightest amongst us are actively trying to progress life down here on the ground....without us having to sing songs at them.
