Well more from my degree in Applied Psychology (I'm currently also studying Psychology and Criminology).

It is amazing how much of your stuff comes from Wikipedia, given your qualifications.

Matt, you sometimes post some interesting views but why do you have to be so antagonistic? You appear to be determined to turn everything into a battle, and it seems you can only perceive other's motivations in the same light. It means people focus on how you come across rather than your views.

For what it's worth, I think people's ability to be who they want to is important, but Jamie it would be interesting to know if the curative aspects of surgery remain over time?

People's responses to who feel they are is presumably an evolving thing too? As I'm sure there are many things we'd change about ourselves if we could, where would you draw the line?

No-one has ever won a messageboard argument, ..ever FACT (apart from the old school meets in the Sainsburys car park)

There are no winners of messageboard arguments,...only losers.

As a personal observation, if the guy wants a sexless existence, he should try marriage,...but that's very expensive indeed

This person is clearly changing their appearance to shock and get a reaction.

As they are doing that, they have to take whatever reaction they get, and either like it or lump it.

Do you mean "whatever" reaction

Usually they do, but that its may not always be the case. There are a minority of cases where people have made a poor choice. Some people who transgender 'make a mistake' (Hence the UK has the graduated process of living as a man / woman for two years). Obviously such a decision is a very big, and kind of irrecoverable one, that should not be undertaken lightly and without total certainty.

Personally, I don't understand why someone would want to undergo cosmetic surgery to look like an alien, but then I don't have to really live with that. If someone really wants to do that, and they're 'not mentally ill', then why would anyone really give a f**k (let alone single such a person out as 'asking for it').

Maybe you should try it, it could add some depth to your arguments, to actually cite something other than your own emotional feelings.

I think forums largely are places for people to basically test arguments over trivial issues, and trade insults.

Well yes, it could be, but its also a case that people with similar issues, find their symptoms disappear when under going varying forms of transformation - including in more extreme cases cosmetic surgery.

For example, when you have people with serious body issues, the act of actually undertaking some kind of physical surgical transformation often results in a loss of psychological problems. So the act of undertaking the surgical transformation can be curative.

Don't dispute that, I just think there must be a grey area whereby loved ones and medical professionals must wonder whether they ought to suggest an alternative.

You'd like to think. Although in the article it does state he'd spent time with doctors in his teens trying to deal with this.

I guess its not really all that different from people who have all kinds of face piercings and tattoos - just a more 'extreme' form of that.

When does this stuff stop being self expression and start being mental illness?
One day it will probably be possible to alter yourself on a genetic level. Where should we draw a line?

It's an interesting question - and also, who draws the line? Who would you trust to make a judgement about what people are allowed to do to themselves that causes no direct harm to anyone else?

It might not harm anyone else directly but it cold harm society and cost the tax payer. What is acceptable changes with time and becomes more 'normal' as a result. What is acceptable and what is good for society are not necessarily the same thing of course.
