Question for referees out there. Benteke was given offside by Atkinson, but in his own half. He clearly indicated offside and then raised his arm as the kick was taken. However Benteke played the ball in his own half after coming back from an offside position in the Watford half. Shouldn't the free kick have been given from where Benteke was actually offside (in theWatford half), not from where he eventually played the ball (in the Palace half)?

I certainly remember from a few years back that you couldn't. Nor could you be offside from a free kick or a throw-in.

However, the rules may have well have changed since.

You definitely CAN be offside from a free kick! Imagine how the game would be if you couldn't be. You're right in that you cannot be offside from a throw in though.

I bow to your superior knowledge. Such was not the case back in the 60s and 70s, though. It must have gone the same way as the rule about passing back to the keeper and other anachronisms.

Can't be offside from a goal kick, corner kick or throw-in; but for sure can be offside from a free kick.
