And there is a decent argument that the "armed struggle"only came into being after the civil rights movement (modelled on the movement of the same name in the USA) and aimed at getting rid of the apartheid like state we had set up (giving in to unionist threats of terrorism) and turned a blind eye to while it flourished for decades was greeted by unrestrained violence.

If you were a catholic youth in 1968-1972,I suspect you'd have been likely to see your Provos as somewhat more your friends than the B Specials and the army...back in the days when Paisley was describing catholics as “they breed like rabbits and multiply like vermin”,at a loyalist rally in 1969. Mind you he'd have felt right at home amongst the way some describe asylum seekers today, but that's another story.

Terrorism apologist alert.

Just making a note of that.

No that isn't what I said. I said it is "easy to understand". "Understandable" implies it is acceptable and given I expressly said "It doesn't excuse it. It doesn't make it right" I think it's fairly clear that I do not think it is acceptable.

Terrorism apologist alert.

A quick read-up on what the B Specials were and what they did would leave you wondering who the terrorists actually were.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

I'm sure all sides were capable of atrocities, doesn't excuse any of them. Leagle had a go at Paisley, a bigot no doubt, but how many deaths did he order compared to McGuiness?

It could be said that he potentially saved a lot of lives in being an integral part of the peace process.

Where we are now in the week of his death is that Sinn Fein have half the vote by democratic means that says a lot for him and for others who put guns aside.

So where does N.Ireland go from here I think its up in the air just like Scotland.

The 'lead' country in the union, us, seems to be headed for a cosy 50's world of faded empire grammar schools so forth hardly forward looking.

So the nationalist cause seems to be bright and hopeful outward-looking especially to the young.

Rubbishing and finger-wagging from unelected Mrs May just pushing people into the nationalist camp.

Fair enough.

Getting proverbially mugged for the slightest misinterpretation is a bit irritating I know.

Northern Ireland is not Eire.

It could be, but his motives are certainly in question.

Strange statement - she won Maidenhead with a massive 54% majority. She would have won even if all opposition parties had combined their votes. Hardly unelected. I'd say very firmly elected (whether you like her or not)
