He regrets Wilf not playing for England, Wilf was in great form when Southgate was interim manager, so much so that he was the first player he went to see when he was made permanent, so why did he not pick him?!

Very odd!

"I didn't really appreciate there was this disappearing egg timer on him going to the Ivory Coast. He was the first player I went to see when I got the job permanently but he'd already made his mind up."

too little too late i'd say

I used to have a lot of time for Southgate, I knew him when he just broke into the Palace team and you couldn't have met a nicer or more humble bloke but this has hacked me right off.

Basically Wilf scores an incredible goal and he realises that there is a danger that his decision to not push hard enough for him to play for England is going to be questioned so he comes out with stuff that in my opinion paints Wilf in a negative light, questioning his commitment. I think its totally unnecessary diversion tactic away from the fact that they know he would have been a very useful weapon for an extremely average England side, maybe not as a starter but certainly off the bench. Even if its true and Wilf wasn't committed to England, why feel the need to go to the press about it, he could easily have given a more diplomatic answer.

this smacks of "oopps we've fcuked up here lads, pass it to Gareth, he's the boss now"

He was in contention for the job (no other contenders tbh) and should have had the balls to front Zaha up there and then saying "if/when I get the job, i want you in" rather than waiting until it was confirmed, he'd got his blazer, new office and shiny new car.

As others have said, I'd hoped Southgate would be a breath of fresh air but it seems he's still as stale as the other old bluffers running the show. nothing will change.

To be fair to Southgate, the Wilf & England ship had sailed before he got the gig.

sheesh, you guys are harsh.

not sure what Southgate could have done different. It doesn't paint anyone in different light.

Last year, Zaha hadn't been good enough for England. potential, maybe. but I never saw enough in his performances which meant he was good enough. It's only this year - and only really recently - that he has stepped pon to the next level, and would be one Of the 'form' players Southgate has picked.

Southgate wasn't manager until roundabout the time Zaha had made his mind up. the fact that he went to see him straight away meant that he held him in high esteem.

Now Zaha is playing well, Southgate's been asked the question - and he's responded with how he saw it. nowt wrong with that. It's a shame, but southgate aint clairvoyant.

I must admit that I read Southgate's comments this morning and thought that they had the ring of truth about them

Danny Mills also commented that Zaha had "taken the easier option and thought 'I might get a few more caps and might get to play in a few more tournaments because my chances with England are probably going to be limited' which also has the ring of truth about it

You have got it wrong. Southgate was responding to critism by Steve Parish. He had to come back with what went on and the way i read it i make Southgate right. Wilf was not 100% committed to England and Southgate could not put him in his squad for that reason. That is what i want to hear from the England manager. Too many players have been capped that dont really show the passion for their country that they put on for their clubs and its part of the reason we dont do very well in tournaments.

Why didn't you ask him if there was an egg timer, Gareth? Should be the first thing you ask when competing for talent (and it was known we were competing with IC). Only need to play him for 10 seconds competitively lock him in.

If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities.

You're right about the SP part but you don't think Wilf would have been 100% committed to England had he been selected? Do you really believe that?

As for England not doing well in tournaments because they don't show passion, I can't agree with that - they've just not been good enough.

Personally I'm not sure what Wilf is committed to.

He could have said to Ivory Coast that he would play for them but after the AFCON as he didn't want to leave Palace at a time when they were in the brown stuff but he appeared to be more committed to playing in AFCON than helping Palace avoid the relegation spots

He came to a palace game when he was interim manager (think Burnley) wilf scored and had a good game...towns end was absolute toilet that day....and he got picked for the squad.....Ross barclays has not had a minute on the pitch under Southgate, yet he puts oxlaide chamberlain in the central midfield role....it's just gonna be the same old same old with the blazer that is Southgate.
