Was sorry that the speedway packed up at Plough Lane as a kid I used go in the post war years when they used to get big crowds and watched riders like Ronnie Moore and Norman Parker.

The crowd numbers were only surpassed by football.

I think you have to separate Greyhound racing from the lack of care after their racing days are over.They are fast and reports suggest that they like a quick sprint as opposed to my Westies who would take a week to lap the track---"Horses" for courses Innitt!

One of our greatest ever Players Johhny Byrne had a greyhound which used to race at the Wimbledon track.

It couldn't of been that popular, as they wouldn't of closed it down. More than likely just kept open to feed the bookies with races, but they can use others elsewhere instead.
Simple economics really.

I doubt many will be put down, it s the usual scaremongering to worry/force people to take them on.
Although it has to be said that once they've finished racing the Greyhound is left in kennels for a lot of their life, until they are rehomed. That in itself is difficult for a greyhound as they have been used to kennel life and the transfer to a home can be unsettling for them, but they make good pets, don't need much exercise and are a lovely dog. My wife re homes them via the RGT and the trainers often 'threaten' to have a dog put down to try and move on a dog they no longer want.

Dog handlers and carers are usually animal lovers so I'm sure they treat the dogs well at least.
Many dogs are culled in the racing industry which is a sad waste. In the long term I suppose the reduction of such activity will be a good thing. A drop on the ocean though in the grand scheme of animal welfare.

On a football note. It does amuse me that the likes of AFC Wimbledon can get a stadium agreed while we still wait.
