Very stupid post this, but for those of you past a certain vintage you may remember along with Val Doonican, Bernie Clifton and Roy Castle, another giant of light entertainment from the 1970s was Vince Hill - who was utterly lacking in star quality, talent or anything remotely interesting - even Noel Edmonds has an evil charm to fool the ignorant - but Vince Hill - how did he manage a career of being a star with so little going for him? See the link, a total charisma bypass. I'm not expecting too many replies unless you are old and strangely curious.

I last saw an ageing Vince Hill and his wife being interviewed on TV when the Rolf Harris 'matter' broke. They said they were shocked, couldn't believe it etc. but would stand by their friend whatever the outcome.

Perhaps ill-advised (probably not advised at all) with hindsight, but it was entirely genuine and actually quite a choker.

Sorry - not much 'Fun' from me there!

I went to school with his son, he was in my maths class. Very troubled kid, who suffered with mental health and heroin problems. Haven't seen him for about five years now, but he was still in a poor state then.

Last saw him on Episode 4 of Series 12 of Grand Designs when he was pissed off at the house being built next door.

The Thames Boathouse
Kevin McCloud follows Lysette and Nigel Offley, who are knocking down an old Thames boathouse and constructing a cutting-edge home in its place. Taking inspiration from the river itself, they have designed a building of waves and curves with a huge glass porthole for a roof light. But problems begin almost from the start, as they can't find a contractor willing to build over the water, their architect leaves unexpectedly and the costs turn out much higher than expected. To make matters worse, the neighbours aren't happy about such a radical sight in their traditional community. As they begin to compromise, Kevin wonders if the couple's dreams will ever be realised.

I am deeply troubled by the fact I know this!

Why worry about TODAY when TOMORROW will be even worse.

Yeah, f**k. I guess that explains why I've not run into him. I wouldn't say we were close or friends, but I did know him to talk to (we were in the same remedial maths class). He had serious problems with heroin over the years.

Edited

Also he was a bit of a s**t, and a very absent father (Athol).
