I think we are all our own gods. The sooner we admit to worshipping ourselves the happier we'll be. Not saying we can't be nice people and do stuff for others, but everyone ought to put themselves first and not feel guilty about it.

Throughout history, The Powers That Be haven't wanted people thinking that way. Hence the need for religion as a means of control.

But if you practice bigotry, hate and vengeance and justify it by claiming it is God's will then you will have a nasty surprise on Judgement Day. We're just sacks of meat and bones that support a brain, of which 8-10% is given over to the largely non-essential functions that we call 'us', the rest just regulates the system. Probably half of that part we would call us, is really operating levels of cognitive awareness. Gods, not really, we're semi-sentient modes of transportation for viruses and bacteria.

I don't want to go to heaven run by a vindictive, authoritarian, trickster god. That sounds more like hell. If there is an afterlife, everyone except agnostics and atheists are probably going to be disappointed.

Let me elaborate then. Who really judges us, drives us, sets the rules, doles out karma....? Ourselves in my opinion. Whether that's because of electrical impulses in a nervous system, chemicals, hormones...whatever, I don't care. But given that we impose our own sense of (or lack of) guilt on ourselves, then we are our own Gods. Some people want to attribute that to a deity, perhaps because they can't can't deal with the idea of being fully responsible for their own drives and behaviours and perhaps because they feel that they need the threat of a more powerful judge to keep themselves operating within guidelines they imposed upon themselves. Fair enough. But for me, God is a man made construct and therefore man himself/woman herself must be and contain the God they created. Society has taught me a rough set of guidelines for right and wrong. I have them stored within me and I can adhere to them (usually) and I can be disappointed in myself when I fail.
