The fact that private schools are VAT exempt and have charitable status is bizarre.

Blatant unfairness, set up by elites for elites.

Though I do recognize the usefulness of going off on tangents....Do it all the time myself.

It's related yes, but not really relevant. You can be for the abolition of private schools and still think this policy is pure garbage. It doesn't actually improve the education of one single child, does it? It's gesturing, plain and simple.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

How does offering free school meals for all benefit?

Most families can afford to pay for the meals or a packed lunch and subsidising them rather than focussing that money on other much needed areas of education does not make sense.

The current means based system for free school meals works although if there are worries it does not reach all needy students then the testing could be revised.

There is no point offering freebies to middle class children for no reason and just a quick soundbite.

Each students meals cost approx. £500 a year per student and would cost £2 billion for all primary school students, would the VAT on Private Education cover the costs?

If it is then it isn't doing a very good job is it.

Social mobility in this country is a joke regardless of the type of government.

All children should have access to the best available teachers. Private system hoard them.

We don't have a fire service or army that only serves an elite nor should we have an education system that is broken into two systems.

I realise on this I'm pretty far left....But I've honestly never seen how not having equality of opportunity for children is acceptable.

You can't stop teachers wanting the best paid and appealing jobs. You could ban private education but I doubt that would work out too well. The system reflects Darwinian principles. Those that succeed have the advantages and make the rules. Appealing as it is to equalise things through policy, I believe it is doomed to failure. VAT on school fees is really just a stealth tax on the rich. I'm not convinced it is going to work for the purposes of social engineering.

Corbyn has ten pledges?

You know more about it than I do.

Eh no....can't stand the rag....though it does produce occasionally nice infographics.

Considering private school fees are £10-£20k per year and there are apparently 600,000 kids in private education - yes.

So how is this policy a 'shock' to you when you don't know any single one of his policies?

But the majority do not need the help, so why focus £2b of income where it is not needed?

There is not that great a stigma to FSM.

Personally I would ban the private education system.

In the same way we ban private armies or private fire services.

Private systems are divisive and produce and encourage elites....who then suck up the best within society just for themselves and their kids.

Government should be run for the many not the few.

We should encourage meritocracy not elitism.
