We need a diverse school system to fill every role in society, soon gone will be the pool of cheap labour from the EU. I am sure PM May realises that we will need a heck of a lot ill educated (and hungry) labour.

I say lower school leaving age, rather than raise it further, introduce Grammar Schools. Probably would not go as far as the Tories and bring back indentured service.

If the likes of free meals is a goal should priorities for the low paid need to be changed rather than subsidised childcare and free primary school meals; perhaps put a 20% tax on Sky, mobile phone, Xboxes and PlayStations, you could make it 100% and persons would still pay, or is that the ill education?

Extrapolating the theory that the state knows better how to spend money, is this a reason to totally get rid of tax credits etc.? If the consensus is that these types of initiatives are good then the State knows how to spend better than the individual.

Nothing wrong with private schools, apart from politics of envy. Any kid should be able to go private school if they have the aptitude. The individuals I know who make the decision to fund their kids education have mostly saved to do it, lived within their means and not breed like rabbits.

The tax status of public schools should be looked and their usefulness to society in general but for every 20% tax applied, should private school users be able to opt out of paying for other people's children in a failing State School System? After all there are precedents.

I actually think Hrolf makes a good point. Expecting equality of opportunity in a society as economically unequal as ours is head in the clouds.

But this isn't reason to do nothing. We need a more equal society financially, if we're going to give kids some aspiration. One of the biggest problems we have right now is kids growing up with no belief they will get anywhere, and statistically, they're right to think that.
