I think that always has to be the case, where the parents action may not be in the ultimate best interests of the child. Parents aren't necessarily always acting in the best interests of a child but maybe for more selfish motives. I don't think its something we should be comfortable with, and by default cases like this, which then place the issue into the realm of the Judicary, are necessary to establish how fair a government decision may be (given the motives of politicians and government may not be in the best interests of either children or parents). But I think with a triumvate of parent, state and judiciary, you ultimately have a fair in long winded method of establishing a 'reasonable' intervention.

When I look back on my school life I always fondly remember the algebraic equations and the Tolpuddle Martyrs. Oddly I hope my kids remember our tour of America and a fortnight snorkeling and making sand castles in the Maldives.

Probably true, unless of course they want to go into higher education, at which point remembering how to solve algebraic equations is probably going to be of more value. And lets face it kids being kids, are going to form happy memories of the less impressive, less expensive holiday you took outside of term time. When I look back on my school life I remember largely the cruel indifference, intimidation, violence and bullying by teachers and along with how I got through that by doing some of the same to weaker kids. The sexual bullying particularly sticks with me.

I'm worried that a kid missing a week of school is looked upon like they are going to fail in life. if they are that needy, then boarding school would seem to be the only answer, that or extra tuition. That brings me onto another point. Easter holidays vary from school to school from 2-3 weeks, not including the statutory 'inset' day that usually accompanies the monday of any return to school. What the hell needs to be done on that extra day that can't be done during the previous break? (I don't have kids, nor do i intend to, so can I have my taxes back too?)
