When I was at primary school, my family used to go on holiday at the end of August which meant starting back at school about a week after the term began. The school had no issues with it and it didn't do me any harm and it certainly didn't prevent me from becoming the well-adjusted, wordly-wise, grounded and educated person I am today. Its the same thing over here. Once your kid misses 5 days, your pulled up in front of a committee. Miss 10 days and your in court. Education is important obviously, but parents should not be dictated to in regards to whats more important for their child. However, just taking a trip to Disney because its cheaper off term is very dodgy. But a child, presented the opportunity to do something/go somewhere very interesting and maybe wont get another same opportunity to do so, parents should not be penalized for it. I know a couple that took a year off of work, took their kids and traveled the world for 12 months, on the cheap. Their kids came back fluent in 4 new languages, and they get by on several others. They could tell you so much about history and geography, culture and religion that left me wondering if we should do the same. These kids were 8 and 10.

Maybe the parents should refund the costs of the infrastructure for the days their child is missing from school? That would be fair but would cost the parents much more than they would be saving on their off peak holiday plans.

I don't know what most schools are like now, but in effect there was little in terms of work in the last week of year, and the first week of the new school year.

Its also worth noting that plenty of schools seem to have 'school trips' such as Skiing or other thinly veiled excuses for teachers to get a 'free holiday' (such as trips to Athens or France). These only have some 'educational bonus', such a student exchange to France teaching you that not all xenophobia is necessarily wrong, or allowing you to test your pathetic command of a foreign language while your teachers load up on duty free.

I went on a school trip in 1965 as an 11 year old (which I saved up and paid for by helping the milkman on his rounds at weekends) - we went to Italy visiting Lake Garda, Milan and Venice as I recall.

Was just a sight seeing trip, nothing more and I'm sure us kids subsidised the teacher's travel costs and we had little supervision. My best mate nearly got run over by a coach one afternoon as he was p1ssed (at 11 years old) after he drank chianti from the bottle at a bar full of Italian soldiers.
