Whatever the intention, I'd still favour the consistent application of the laws of the game rather than decisions made on the basis of a moral judgment.

I'm not suggesting that happened by the way, I just think the officials got it wrong.

I've said it before: I'm for eliminating the penalty area as the arbiter of whether a spot kick is awarded or not. Simplified: DOGSO = penalty wherever it happens on the pitch, everything else is a direct free kick from the spot of the foul. (At the same time, we can eliminate the triple-whammy punishment for a DOGSO in the box whereby a penalty is given - restoring the GSO - the offender gets sent off and suspended for 3 games.)

This means that wrestling at corners can be policed in the same manner as it is everywhere else - because it's not an automatic penalty - and fouls like that on Townsend this week and, more famously, on Arjen Robben in the WC vs. Mexico, are free kicks at the spot of the foul which, importantly, can be defended.

It also means that the officials aren't challenged to decide if fouls like the one last night are inside or outside the box, just whether there was a clear goal-scoring opportunity denied.

We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football.
