And you would be right. The most premature baby to survive ever was in Canada born at 22 weeks gestation (18 weeks early)

I didn't look this up by the way I just know slot about premature babies as my son was born 16 weeks early at 24 weeks gestation.

That's pretty extreme. My daughter was born at 27 weeks. Always been impatient. Mayday was genuinely brilliant. A top SCBU.

Anyway you have correctly highlighted the problem of Croydon council which has been Labour in the North and conservative in the south for ever . The deciding ward has always been Waddon and to some extent Addiscombe and that's it . Whatever they decide is what we get .

I think its time we maybe went back to the old boundries , Purley and Coulsdon district council should detatch from Croydon and leave Croydon to sort its own s***e out .

The site for the proposed 17 storey building is Banstead Road/Brighton road/Russell Hill Purley which currently houses the Library, empty shops and the Baptist Church. The proposed 220 flats new Church and community building has been put forward by the Baptist Church who own the site and have done for years. It is in the middle of Purley and although the site badly needs developing 17 stories would be excessive and totally out of keeping with the area.

Chris Philp sent out an email enclosing a letter he sent to the Secretary of State asking him to intervene

Dear All,

Last week, I received some fantastic news: Croydon Council’s decision to grant planning consent to a 17 floor skyscraper in Purley a few months ago has been put on hold by the Government!

I am delighted that Sajid Javid, the Secretary of State, has agreed to my request to “Call In” the Purley Skyscraper planning application for an independent Planning Inspector to review. The Inspector will review Croydon Council's disastrous decision to grant consent, and then make his own binding decision. This process will take some months.

You can read my letter to the Secretary of State here and his response to me in full here. You can also read the basis for “Calling In” the application here.

The Labour-run Council's decision to allow the skyscraper was opposed by over 9,000 local residents who signed my petition. Seven local Residents Associations also actively opposed the Council’s decision. On the night that the Council made its decision, I led a protest by hundreds of local residents.

For the Government to intervene on Council planning decisions is incredibly rare and happens only when the decision has an important or serious impact on the local area.

I have previously called for Sadiq Khan, in his role as London Mayor, to overturn the decision - however he sadly refused to do so.

Before the Council reached its decision I made my own objections to the plan clear. 17 storeys is simply too tall for Purley – the next highest building only has 4 floors – and is completely out of character with the local area. This could also set a precedent for more skyscrapers to be built in the future in Purley and the surrounding area. Furthermore, this skyscraper was poorly thought out when it came to the strain it will place on local infrastructure, with only 20 new parking spaces for 220 new flats. The site does need developing, but 6-8 floors would be more appropriate.

The Council’s decision to back this skyscraper was wrong. Sadiq Khan’s refusal to intervene on residents’ behalf was wrong. The decision to hold an independent review is absolutely the right one.

There is no guarantee at all about the decision the Inspector will reach. But at least local people will now have the chance to put their views to someone independent who will hopefully listen more carefully than the Labour Council.

I am delighted that my request for “Call In” has been granted and I will keep you fully up to date with the details of the review when I have them.

Standing outside the Town Hall he said Croydon University Hospital was just 300 yards away.

Also that his twins were born there, 25 weeks premature. I calculate that to be 15 weeks gestation.

This guy just doesn't know his ar*e from his elbow does he.

Brilliant spot! Says it all as to how too many of our MPs prey upon the naivete and / or disinterest of far too much of the electorate.

Wow Kennybrown and Mapletree. A close friend of my wife also had a baby at around the same gestation. The survival rate nowadays is simply staggering, compared to even 15, 20 years ago. One thing to be thankful for.

Yup. The paediatrician more or less told us to give up on any hope of survival. Then the SCBU team came crashing in, said they do these all the time and whisked her off.

Apart from a bent head from laying on one side all the time without amniotic fluid no obvious problems. Just smells of sheep.
