He will be a lame duck President as he has no political vehicle behind him and he will be forced to work with the established political parties. I think that's generally what the role of President is in France. I don't think they can actually force laws on the country without parliamentary approval.

You're right to say they can't force laws without parliamentary approval. If a supportive assembly is in place then the President is very influential and can set policy. Unless the only thing about "mainstream politics" you don't like is the lack of a brick wall across all points of entry to the UK? I don't think the majority want a terrorist apologist,CND supporting 70's throwback with an obsession for manholes as an alternative.

Usually the situation is that Far Right parties remain strong until they're elected, and then fail spectacularly.

There are also many who remember how his brand of politics went before Thatcher and Blair.
