Yep, it's a bit near the mark but everyone knows it's a mean of winding them up. I have heard much worse from other clubs when they play their rivals. And I mean, much worse ... You will find any half decent chant in football is a bit near the mark. The same goes for comedy. People should just lighten up a bit. In the context it is being sung, it actually means nothing ... When I have heard songs that could potentially offend me, I just suck it up (no pun intended) as it's part & parcel of football. You give it, you take it ...

I reckon we can get a rise out of them by singing pro-Palace songs very loudly all game when we play them next season. Don't get me wrong, I love being offensive and couldn't care less. I just think we can still royally f**k them off without even bothering with this particular subject. And I'd rather read in the paper about how the pundits praised our fans for supporting their team loudly all game than read some tripe about us being a bunch of feral homophobes. Why give the media any more ammunition to slag off Palace?

And if a Brighton player were gay or a Palace player for that matter then any chanting directed at that player is definitely homophobia. Maybe if the clubs themselves said it was banned no matter how intentioned then it would just ebb away anyway. The fans won't stop v Brighton unless they are forced to. In the past when Justin Fashanu came out that was plain nasty. Different times though. Had to be quite strong back then in the wider world.

You would not believe what happened at Selhurst when Paul Canoville, their first black player, made his debut for them in '83-ish. I was there and haunts me even now. Worst experience at Selhurst. No fighting but the abuse he got from practically every single Chelsea fan out of the 5,000 that were there. The N F and Far Right had a strong foothold there and their 'fans' were into it big-time.

I don't think many people who join in the 'Brighton take it up the bum' chants have any real malicious intent, and are being knowingly juvenile for a laugh. But the chants do effectively put all homosexuals on the wrong side of the 'us vs them' divide, and equate them with a range of undesirable characteristics. Considering the history of instances of homophobia in football, the fact that these massed chants perpetuate intolerance, and the fact that there's little room for subtlety when it comes to a whole crowd chanting, I should think this sort of thing is best avoided - especially given the media profile of our club now.

No one is actually offended by the chants. It's two people trying to make a name for themselves by promoting a "cause" which is unnecessary. I've got gay friends, I would happily tell them they're a bender to their face and they'd call me a c*** back. It's a joke FFS. "But I find it offensive". So f***ing what??

It is of course rooted in homophobia...Fancy those gay people having no sense of humour about such things....sigh Would be nice to think we have moved on enough as a club and a society to take the piss out of Brighton with chants,that don't need to resort to tired old take it up the bum "jokes".

Millwall always had mixed race lads and we know Chelsea had 1 armed Babs but by & large their fans at that time were overtly racist. They crucified Canonville regularly. Anyone who hasn't, should read his book ... it's a great read and makes you realise what he had to endure from his 'own' fans! His life pre/post football was fascinating too ...
