Yawn.
It's alright for gay people to bang on and on and on about being gay, and spouting innuendos and bile constantly (Clairy, Norton, Walliams, Spence, Knockaert, Dunk etc.) but as soon as something comes back that they don't like, they get all precious.

Man up FFS (No not that way).

I do agree with this to a degree . Some gay people (I know a few) go on and on about wanting to be treated the same as everyone else and don't want people making an issue out of their sexuality but they make a big song and dance out of it themselves and have to let everyone know within about 10 seconds of meeting that they are gay. Also pda which is totally over the top bordering on smutty which I would find equally uncomfortable coming from a hetrosexual couple. No one needs to feel like they are intruding into someone's bedroom activities when they are going about their daily business.

Yes, gay or straight I don't want to feel like a part of someone else's foreplay.

Unless it's two girls

This, this right here, is the crux of it. Gay people ragging on gay stuff is fine. Spurs fans calling themselves "yids" is fine. Black people calling themselves the "n" word (edited to avoid company filters) is fine. Someone not part of those minorities using the same words against them is - almost always - not fine.

For example.

Yeah here's one. Those who talk about it all the time never get it!

So I can't call Jimmy Savile a "dirty paedo" because I like older women?

I'm being flippant. I knew what you meant. Sorry.

Respect for your opinion and sincere it sounds too but i just can't agree with you there. Shouting 'bender' at a straight Brighton fan 50metres away is not quite at the same level as attacking two guys for holding hands, is it?

I get that it must make some fans feel uncomfortable but in the bigger scheme of things it's just two hours of some people being a bit immature and daft and some stupid but but away from that they are back down the pub or at home and probably couldn't give a hoot about others' sexuality.

I think what I am trying to say is 'don't let it upset you out of proportion to what it really is'. It's not banter. It is offensive. For two hours. And that is the point. It's meant to be. But, paradoxically, not meant toward gay people as a group but specifically Brighton fans.

Confusing, i know

I definitely agree that the two scenarios you have mentioned are very different, and that one offence is worse than the other. However, it's not quite the point I was trying to make. What I was trying to say is, that just because chanting at football games may not be directed at gay people, or that people aren't violent towards gay people, it doesn't make the chanting in itself less homophobic. I hope you can see the distinction that I'm trying to make here.

I see your point about not getting worked up about it, and that it's just two hours of people being daft and silly. Whilst I agree that the majority are probably not chanting with any particular malice, I think to reduce it to just 'two hours of sillyness' is slightly naive. What if these sort of chants make a person feel uncomfortable at a match, meaning they choose not to return in future? Or a fan struggling with his/her sexuality hears these chants, making it even harder for them to come out or feel happy and comfortable with who they are? What if a young fan picks up on this chanting/abuse and goes into school the next day and directs it at someone else, thinking that this sort of view/ behaviour is acceptable. Yes I can see that I am probably labouring the point here, but I do think that it is valid.

Yes there are worse things in the world, and in football, than a fan calling someone else a 'bender' or accusing them of taking it up the bum. But I just think as a club it's time we moved on, it's outdated, it's offensive and it's just not necessary.

I hope this doesn't come across as an attack on you Kermit, I can see where you're coming from but I hope you understand my point of view as well.

I'll tell you what, if they quit with the 'pikeys', 'caravan-dwellers', 'you set your town alight', 'you ripped off the St John's Ambulance' and the '2p in the £' s***, I'll stop with the benders and screaming queens taunts; until then it's business as usual.

I know you're kidding but, just for the record, calling out an individual for something heinous is not the same as calling all of The Weed "gay". There's nothing wrong with being gay, there's everything wrong with being a paedo (and likely necro, and possible accomplice of the Yorkshire Ripper).
