Tell you what - if ever you need a transfusion I'll donate a pint so you can have some English blood and then can finally stop deluding yourself that you already have some

Am ashmed of myself for forgetting, Missed out on going to a march with the EDL in Luton normally a lot of fun exchanging banter with the locals.
Am sure at least half the country forget as its not exactly something that is celebrated properly in this country is it. Too many w***ers would protest that its racist and not representive of everyone living in the UK.
Happy belated ST Georges Day my English brothers and sisters.

Only conquered people celebrate national days Contray to popular opinion, I kind of identify a British and English (as well as Roma) - but it does sometimes concern me that Nationalism in this country has become very much about defining what 'we don't like about others' than what we like about ourselves.

Such as the EDL, Britain First and even in Mainstream politics, Nationalism seems to be more about forcing ideals on others, stating what we don't like than celebrating ideals and achievements.

Of course any of us can say we are this or that without any commitment. You have a Scottish father so I don't think anyone can smirk at you saying you're part Scottish if that's what you feel. Though without living there some might say that's more heritage.

My father's Northern Irish but lived in England for most of his adult life. But I lived here all of mine and feel one hundred percent English while respecting my heritage.

I think for someone to say they are purely this or that they have really have to have lived there during their formative years....Or have committed to it for at least several....with exceptions....some people need to live somewhere due to climate medical needs ete ete.

People respect commitment. When Tyson Fury sometimes calls himself Irish I think some had a right to smirk and call him a plastic paddy. He's never lived there...Really he's talking about his heritage....But he is what he commits to.

A very fair post. My connection to Scotland has always been strong through family and regular visits and to see where it all started for the ancestors. Pretty grim, if i'm honest where that aspect is concerned.

Genuinely supporting Scotland as a young kid in those far off days when we actually qualified for a World Cup. Felt really rotten in '74. No defeats and still eliminated in round one. Palace also got relegated.

Just something I was born into. Not brainwashed or owt. Apart from Andy bloody Stewart on the LP every effin' weekend. My dad was no Scottish nationalist but he did love to take the mick out of the sassenachs every now and then but in good humour.

Travelling through the place properly though I can't help but feel a sense of pride that half of me is Scottish. It is just so beautiful with stunning scenery and have always felt welcome and comfortable up there. My father-in-law has a salmon run river in his back garden ffs

Yup,"love" of country has been hijacked by the right...and its a "I don't like anyone else" kind of nationalism.

The reason St George's day is not a big deal is because most of us are comfortable in our combination Englishness and Britishness and don't need to get OTT and excessive about it..

Nope, his nationality British. Whether we agree or not, England is a part of the Union, with Wales and Scotland, and defines a single nationality between those nations (its a bit more complex than that as there are different types of British citizenship entitlement for overseas territories).

We can identify as English, but like Welsh and Scottish, our nationality is British.

If one or more of your parents are British citizens, irrespective of where you are born, you are automatically entitled to apply for British citizenship

I explained that I don't go in for that 'for St George and the Queen ' malarkey. But I still marked the day. I also wished everyone who does like the St George stuff a happy day.
Some people go out of there way to be offended.
BTW. Any sign of that Merkel caused the Greek debt crisis evidence I was promised?

Also its all a bit Catholic, all this saints business. Assuming your not particularly religious or Catholic, why do people make such a fuss about Patron Saints - especially Protestants, who did away with a lot of that petitioning favour business.
