Yeah but they were largely earned by women supported by men such as the Womens Sufferage movement etc, and typically they obtained those rights and steps against firm resistance by a patriarchal society that opposed not only those women, but those men that supported them.

It is a big issue among the Islamic and Muslim feminist movements the whole notion of men determining rules for women. Muslim feminists generally want to remove the obligation and the idea of a dress code determined by men, for one determined by the woman herself.

This I agree with.

OK, but we can't talk about Muslims as if the are separate from British society. They are not. Muslim women in the UK are now British women and our attitudes have to prevail over imported religious dogma. British Islam must embrace British principles, not the other way around, as the liberal Left would like.

Funny,I always thought we prided ourselves on our attitudes and principles including tolerance, diversity and freedom of religion (other than when discriminating against Catholics)over imported nationalist authoritarian dogma..

I identify as a marginal lefty who hates UKIP, but I agree with this.

A few weeks ago I was next to a woman in a burka in a queue at Starbucks, at first I thought it was a bit weird, then I realised it's just plain stupid.

Burqa's aren't a security risk, or a threat to our society. They are just f***ing retarded.

Some white middle class guy from Guildford is likely to get offended on behalf of all Muslims due to post.

I agree with you.And I'm all for trying to persuade people against wearing them. The point is,do we forcibly ban them?If we do,should we ban a lot of pretty unsavoury things about the way some non muslim people dress at times?

Its interesting to see some posters here who usually wax lyrically about the dangers of "political correctness"and telling people what they can and can't say, believe or do,who have no issue when its muslims being told what to wear.

Are you including the male 7/7 bomber disguised as a woman wearing a burqa or the numerous bank robberies carried out around the world by men disguised in that manner.

You further claim that "They are just f***ing retarded" but so are many of the clothes worn by non Muslim Brits like hoodies, baseball caps and baggy jeans for starters

You show reverence to religion at your peril.

The law is what matters and I believe the law should protect people from harmful practices.

Had lunch today with a girl (non Muslim) who worked in Saudi as a nurse and was compelled to wear a face covering along with a form of dress designed to hide her female form.

Personally I tend to notice females with coverings more than I do the brazen women without such clobber.

To a certain extent we do, but all of these concepts are like rubber bands and they have limits.

Some more than others...there has never been a call for diversity from people other than like yourself. Not to the extent that like turkeys they are voting for their own gradual cultural suicide.

The hard left have never spoken for the majority just as the hard right haven't....but you often make the most noise.

Agreed, that a law might not be necessary. It's not really my top priority. There's many much more important issues.

To the other poster that responded.
1) The 7/7 bomber got caught because it was obvious it was a bloke in a burqa.
2) Lots of forms of fashion are retarded. But covering up your entire face is on a different level.

Apart from banning facial coverings there is nothing in there I'd disagree with. Much of it is overtly needed to protect secularism in schools and in equality of legal jurisdiction.

What is so objectionable?
