Perhaps he should make Tau-Cetians pay for it.

No, but Trident is a waste of money really, the UK needs a more flexible silo based solution for the modern age.

Trident is a cold war solution that's just a lot cheaper in terms of political capital than revising our nuclear policy and solution. We no longer require a short to medium range 'guaranteed last strike solution'

A silo based solution would be completely useless. Takes up way too much space and has less tactical advantages. It's a static target and makes a country more vulnerable to attacks than the current system. Can't agree with you here mate.

Former Conservative Defence Minister Michael Portillo has recently described Trident as a “waste of money” which is “completely past its sell-by date”, and “neither independent” nor “any sort of deterrent”

IMO it is far more likely that an attack would be by conventional forces partly as the UKs defence forces are run down to pay for the nuclear non-deterrent.

Mrs May will fire back so its ok nothing to wory about.

Incinerated....Mmmm...Those within the blast radius.

It would take something akin to carpet bombing the whole country to incinerate most at the surface....obviously that isn't going to happen.

Whoever did it would be signing their own nation's death warrant....unless you are Corbyn of course.

Well there is that, Trident only protects up until someone fires a nuclear missile, and then it only allows you to retaliate if you know who that's going to be, as the missiles need to be targeted and the sub in range.

Which was fine when it was the soviet union, as it was in the submarines operational range, and the only real nuclear threat likely to strike at NATO or the UK.

That isn't going to be the case in the future. And it become problematic broadcasting retargeting data to a submarine, as it exposes its location (meaning any sensible enemy is going to sink your submarine first, then launch its missiles).

Back in the cold war it was much harder to pin point vessels based on communications (and in case they could Trident submarines maintained a complete radio silence when on operations).

Now days, that technology is pretty common place and likely accessible to any nuclear nation. Extensive Electronic Warfare counter-measures are an option, but that's an uncertainty. Having the missiles in silos is simply a better option all round.

Aren't you making a lot of guesses here?

How are they going to sink your submarines first without first firing their nukes the the targeting data to be sent? Do you think all the subs are transmitting their location at the same time of something?

You are passing massive risks for the enemy as if they aren't risks.

How do you know they can intercept multiple subs in time?

I think you massively underplay how difficult it would be to destroy the subs before their themselves launch?

As for the location of the threat, part of the point about subs is that most locations are in range.

Mmmm...

So does this mean that you regard what Portillo says as worthy of following or is it just when his view happens to coincide with yours?

I've watched this again this month, Yes, Priminister had a tobacco row, the suggestion from the pressure group was to increase taxes, make all branding the same & disallow advertising. The bloke from the pressure group was mocked.

Your previous post is wrong there is only ever 1 submarine at sea the issue is whether an enemy could destroy it.

Obviously Portillo has been conservative defence minister and has dealt with such matters.
