I believe in the magic of the cup. When I’m on my deathbed, I’d like to look back at the day Palace lifted a major trophy. Remembering that good run in the premier league might not cut it.

But what the people want is Premier League status. Is there anyone who would swap the current revival if it meant that Puncheon goal had won us the FA Cup last May?

Based on my experience with Hibs, I'd take the cup all day long. Before the final last year there were similar chats between Hibs fans about winning promotion back to the premiership or winning the Scottish Cup.

In the end we won the cup, for the first time in 114 years, the week after losing in the playoffs and it must go down as the best day in the clubs history (unfortunately I watched it in a pub in Wembley before the Palace game). There were 100,000 plus on the streets for the parade, it'll be sung about for years and the is still a feel good factor around the club.

Another year in the championship wasn't so bad - we won most weeks and won promotion a couple of weeks ago. It felt good but nothing will beat winning the cup

20 years ago I'd of taken a cup win and a relegation in the same season. Fast fwd 20 years and all I want is to stay in the Prem. the reasons:

1) after 2 administrations anything that resembles security wins in my book
2) we are well behind a lot of clubs our size in terms of stadium & facilities
3) prem money means - hopefully - we can develop Selhurst
4) more money means more investment in other much needed areas of the club
5) we have every chance of becoming the no.1 club in south london finally

Yep, a cup final win would be great but you can't have it all in life! And I'd take the above 5 over 1 solitary cup final win ...when, let's face it ... the cups aren't what they used to be anyway! Sad but true ...

I pretty much agree with you and the longer we stay in the top division the better are our chances of silverware. If we'd been relegated last season we'd have had very little of substance to show for four seasons in the PL, the Euros to deal with, with a depleted squad, losses rather than income and who knows which manager.

Think of all that could go wrong in that scenario: we lose a bunch of our best players - and probably the manager - as they trigger transfers to Premier League sides; we don't make it back before the parachute payments run out; we lose American investment as we're no longer on worldwide telly; we don't get the ground redeveloped and we're right back in an uncertain financial future.

How is any of that worth the fleeting kudos of the cup win that will bring with it the trials of Europa League fixtures on top of the clogged, leg-sapping Championship schedule?

You think Coventry is delving back too far? Ok, Wigan.

FA Cup winners and relegatees - and now about to drop into League One unless they can beat playoff contenders Reading and Leeds while 'Appy 'Arry coincidentally fails to get Birmingham a single point.

The club will not suffer long term effects for not having won the FA Cup. Relegation from the Premiership, at this point in our recovery from administration, is an existential crisis.

It wasn't my original premise to be fair.

You mention Wigan, what about examples from the other side?

Ipswich finished high in the league and it got them nowhere, relegated next season with very little to show for it.

Charlton were completely safe in the Prem, then wanted the manager gone because they couldn't 'progress' and then look at them now.

Do you think either of those fans would rather have won a trophy than sit in midtable/upper midtable for a couple of years?

I get the point that we're in a better position now to survive and strengthen, but the question was cup or league. I'll take the moment that I'm going to remember to the end of my days over finishing 7th.

Very well put.

Our chance of a "romantic" FA Cup win was in 1990. The FA Cup in its current form would be great but just somehow not the same.

I suspect that both of them would prefer to be sat comfortably in the middle of the PL right now, cup or not.

Pointless winning a Cup then disappearing into the lower levels of the Football League. Hopefully, if the club can maintain current form it's going to be a matter of "when" the next opportunity arises not "if".

This.

In years long gone the FA cup was the pinnacle of footballing glory. The money from the cup run would also represented a fair slice of a clubs annual income.
Now it counts for comparably little - certainly financially - compared to remaining in the PL.

If you offered Wimbledon, Coventry, Portsmouth or Wigan supporters to swap a place in the premier league for their FA Cup success including all the happy memories and nostalgia they would say no.

Initially religation hurts, but you forget about it after a while. The glory of winning last forever.

Sorry, yes, realise now it wasn't your original premise.

As for your examples, Charlton had delusions of grandeur and they imploded by their own design. Can't say I'm sorry in what happened because of how it happened and who they are.

Ipswich is actually a great example of the perils of relegation - as they went into administration shortly after dropping out of the Premier League. Since then, they've had revolving ownership and ongoing financial difficulty - exactly the fate I worry lies in store for Palace if we get relegated before the club has properly solidified its financial footing.

Charlton aimed too high too soon. Ipswich rose too quickly, got into Europe and couldn't handle it. Both fell and have never recovered. Had we won the Cup last season - and been playing Thursday night Europa League fixtures - with our thin squad, it's entirely possible that our league position would have been irredeemable.

Conversely, I am at a loss to name a small club that won a cup and used that to build a solid football and financial foundation in the Premier League. Not anyone currently in the Premier League, that's for sure...and that's really the point.

We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football.
