It's only for £5 million which seems a relative pittance to me given the way it has been portrayed

Seems a massive operation for just £5 million. I imagine that it is a warning to other clubs as much as anything.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

A warning to other clubs to do what? Shred all their documents?

I did think yesterday when I read that 180 HMRC officers had been deployed to target £5m in avoided tax that it was a bit overkill and those officers would be better placed chasing up big corporate avoidance

The discussion I heard on Radio 4 suggested that the matter relates to "image rights", where a player sets up a separate company into which a large proportion of their salary (for use of their "image" is paid. Such companies are often based in tax havens, thus avoiding paying tax in the jurisdiction in which the money is earned.

I'm not posh enough to listen to Radio 4 but on the more downmarket Radio 5 they had someone on who said that one of the problems with the "image rights" scam is that many of the footballers who set up offshore companies to receive the payments for image rights weren't that well known and probably didn't have much genuine income relating to their image rights making it just a tax fiddle
