I wonder how the employer would feel if a candidate said "If you offer me the job and I don't get back to you then you have been unsuccessful in employing me"

That's why offers these days have a 'sell by' date. Happens all the time.

Most line managers aren't great at selecting the right CVs. The proof is in whether or not people stick and are successful after they are hired. Professional recruiters have a dramatically better success rate.

Good jobs have been scarce for quite a while due to the economy. Got a lot worse after the Brexit vote. Plenty of work in Dublin though.

I find your first response about professional recruiters is actually linked to the scarcity of roles. Has been since the recession, the time jobs when jobs were tight, the same time as many of these professional HR teams instigated these generic portals. Truly a poor statistical measure.

I remember in 2008 an HR team patting themselves on the back because they reported in an exec meeting that annual 'ee turnover was under 20%. Nothing to do with the recession and the entire company being on a poison pill redundancy deal; one of the most generous redundancy deals I have ever seen.

What do you think of the hidden market and those companies that try to exploit it?

You confuse me.

I don't think the scarcity of jobs is caused by online adverts, it's the economy. Speed to fill has probably increased so jobs don't hang about long.

If HR reports turnover has fallen - and it has - I also don't see your issue. If they say it's fallen because of what they have done then it could be an issue.

Having said that, you can tell when internal initiatives are working by looking at employee engagement surveys.

I was applying for jobs recently without success, one piece of advice I'd give is log every application on an excel sheet with dates, agencies will ask you this and you'll look organised and not that you chucked your CV everywhere
