Let's not forget that when Pulis left Parish made a statement saying that they parted as friends and even had dinner together to discuss terms.

Whilst neither party ever came out and said anything different but the later court case showed that things weren't as rosy as Parish had tried to pretend.

I don't for one moment think that Sam had a eureka moment and decided on the spur of the moment that he needed to retire.

Agree fully. Sam mentioned in the press Sunday about a pre season friendly at his old club Limerick. Has a meeting to discuss transfers and decides to retire. Whatever made him quit it happened in the last few days.

It is laughable that there are some on here trying to blame SP for BigSam's decision. Probably the same people who criticised him for appointing BigSam in the first place! Have people forgotten what it was like under Noades or Jordan (although I have new found appreciation for him since his regular slot on TalkSport). We are a well run club - in the most successful period in my memory. SP has shown himself to be a very good chairman and I think we are very lucky to have him at the helm!

I do think that Parish should perhaps concentrate on the finances and appoint a Director of Football; in the long run it would be money well spent.

What exactly does the Director do ?

Why is it laughable? There must be a reason why so many managers can't wait to jump ship. Freedman was on the verge of taking us up to the Premiership when he jumped ship. Pulis had rescued us from almost certain relegation and took us up to 11th but again decided that he no longer wanted to hang around and Allardyce wanted to show the world that he still had it and wasn't just a firefighter but walked out before showing the world what he could do with a decent team.

And for the record I welcomed his appointment

Freedman thought he was going to a club with superior resources. Shame for him he's not as intelligent as he thinks and didn't realise their debt would level the playing field and left us with the best singers in the division and best goal poacher/space finder/lone striker.

Pulis thought he again was going to a club with superior resources. West Ham.

Sam we cannot say yet. My guess is he'll end up somewhere in December and hasn't done the dirty on us but it's just a guess. 6 months on and off might be more appealing but it looks like he needs his back room staff and that's a problem.

Parish preventing signing too many Rio Ferdinand type or expensive Defoe signings I agree with. Extending contracts of players without consulting the manager first I don't, if that has happened.

An intermediary between the board and manager, allowing the manager to concentrate on coaching and provide advice to the board on footballing matters. Roles vary, but the post often has responsibility for dealing with the technicalities of player contracts. Most are experienced former managers.

It seems to be a common theory that Pulis and later Sam wanted to sign older players with no sell on value and Parish put a block on them but nothing has ever appeared in print to justify these conspiracy theories.

What makes it more interesting is that when Pulis joined WBA he didn't seem to be at all interested in signing the very same players that he allegedly wanted to bring here.

From his public pronouncements it seems that Sam was interested in Defoe but that he realised that his demands were far too expensive.

Personally and without any prior knowledge ... I do not think big Sam is at all well.
In the last few games he has looked pale faced and I thought then he does not look right.
Don't forget he had major heart surgery and managing a football club must be shattering.
I wish big Sam for the future and for all he did for us.

I can understand that Sam and Parish might have disagreed about Defoe, since Parish has been sold pups by getting in shall we say "experienced" players such as Adebayor and Remy and having them lay eggs, whereas Sam obviously worked with Defoe before and knows and trusts him. But both are sensible enough to see that Defoe is not the only player who could do a particular job for us, and Sam's statement was clear that this was not about recruiting particular players at all.

@OneWayTicket - I mentioned his health in passing in a previous post, purely from a point of view of "maybe it's one of these issues that we don't know about"; and I also think that on Sunday with the adrenaline from the relegation fight no longer there he lacked the energy we have seen at every match since the new boys came in. Certainly, people who have undergone that kind of operation can't carry on like say Ferguson and certainly not if they expect to enjoy retirement as well as a career.

I think folk need to stop trying to assign blame to either Sam or to Parish and give the man the benefit of the doubt, if indeed doubt there is; he has at least earned that. The Pulis and Freedman and I suppose Dowie experiences have made some of us cynical.

Looking through these threads so many Palace fans are ok with Allardyce going , just as they were when Pulis left

Who do you think we are good enough for Klopp , Mourinho , Pep ???

Get real , for the past few seasons we have somehow managed to perform an escape act ~ unless we get someone in who is proven , next season we may not be so lucky .

Average? Behave.

As a player he scored incredible and incredibly important goals in both promotion and relegation fights. As a manager he kept us up and built the squad that got us where we are now.

This is bang on the money!

There was no reference in the original post to Parish, albeit if I was still "learning on the job" after seven years, I might think it was time to consider whether I needed to review my position.

Allardyce has no less taken "our club for a ride" than Pulis did; it's just the timing that's different and the apparently friendly way in which Allardyce has done it, but the net result is the same. Allardyce is like that girl who writes you a long letter telling you why she doesn't want to see you anymore, but hopes you can remain friends. Pulis is the one who tells you in a one-line text. You may well feel a bit better about the former one, but the net effect is the same; you're still dumped.

I'm still learning on the job after 36 years. It's when you stop taking in new things every day you need to review your position.

All good. Nothing bad.
