But then surely this puts the attacking player at an advantage because they're either a) open or b) being marked by a weaker header of the ball which would mean more chance of winning a second ball

'Zonal marking' is based on the principle that when free-kicks are taken in the attacking third in wide positions or from corners, there is a dangerous space where goals are scored fom the first touch.

Team who employ 'Zonal marking' deploy the best headers of the ball in that space with other players in positions to defend the second ball.

'Zonal marking' is a collective responsibility as opposed to man-to-man marking which is down to individuals picking up players they are designated to mark. And as I mentioned in another post, some Teams deploy a combination of both zonal and man-to-man marking.

Anyway this is getting away from the subject matter of this thread.

Not really, because it's one of the issues with Silva. I think managers and teams that resort to zonal marking without due aforethought are being lazy and are taking a risk, as one player thinks an opponent leaving his "zone" is being handed over to another but these handoffs are not managed. All a player like Benteke has to do is move about enough and he can find himself in acres of space. If Silva thinks he can improve our defence by making it use zonal marking all the time he is IMHO wrong and could be a disaster. Whether he is of that mind I don't know.

Personally, would Silva be a bit of a gamble ? - YES
But if he is appointed I of course hope he does really well and defies the doubters.

That said, Pochettino was a real gamble for Southampton as they ousted Adkins who had got them back-to-back promotions into the PL.I had a few conversations with those in the game about that appointment !

That said, Pochettino wasn't taking over side that had just fought a relegation battle - he joined them when they were 15th after 22 league games and they had a good setup with a very good academy and scouting infrastructure. And they were on the "Up" following successive promotions.

I guess the crux of what Willo is saying (but not put very well in my opinion) is, is it better to recruit a tired failed premier league manager or do we go for a fresh successful manager from the lower divisions or from Europe?
European managers that might be available to us are likely to perform in leagues that are no better than our championship so all spouting about wonderful overseas coaches need to consider that.

The Silva discussion comes down to: do we think Silva is a failed prem manager for relegating Hull or a successful one for getting them close. I suppose also is a few months in the Prem adequate experience to judge?

Given my argument I draw the conclusion that the Fulham manager would be a better choice because he is a success now and he managed Watford successfully.

They don't but it's about ambition. Do you really think Zaha will sign a new deal with silva in charge because I highly doubt it.

Bet you wish you had a bit of hindsight? Don't need a manager in place, just dangle a financial carrot.

He actually got Watford promoted into the PL - Qualities which we might need if (God forbid) we are relegated !

I see all the speculation about certian managers going here and there and they are all 'Name' managers.

I look at someone who hasn't had a mention on here - step forward Derek Adams of Plymouth. He did a terrific job at Ross Co on a 'Shoestring' getting them promotion to the Scottish league and just missing out on Europe by a point. In his first season at Plymouth, having signed 'Loanees' and 'Frees' he led them to the play-off final where they lost to AFC Wimbledon.Last pre-season they lost a lot of players yet Adams signed a load of 'Frees' and they got promotion to Division One.

This is what I call real achievement, NOT winning the league at Olympiakos and the cup at Sporting.I accept winning league/Cup is commendable but I look at the 'Bigger picture'.Rest assured I'm not being critical of Silva, just saying that his achievements have been 'Over-stated' by many on here. This is my main point, not a strident criticism of Silva.

you are forgetting Silva's achievement of getting a small 2nd div club promoted to the top flight in Portugal earning him the Sporting job. Surely that should be mentioned when you look at the bigger picture too

I've been a member of this site for 10 years, I don't log in as much anymore but every time I do I just read threads that end up being about one poster.

This forum is really going downhill.
