I can think of worse things than turning into a Man City.

Very true, turning into Chelsea would be one

I would like to see a limit to the number of players that any club can loan out which would stop rich clubs buying up the best talent but not playing them

There should really be some rules about that.

Which would be because they're not good enough. Even those that go out on loan in the lower divisions struggle to get regular starting places.

Many of us were really hopefull about Sullay Kaikai after he lit up the lower leagues out on loan. Sadly he's not there yet at Prem level.

Cynic or realist? It's a fine line!

We signed appiah at 21 years old. I'd hardly call him a youth player.

It's a challenge to blood youngsters in the prem unless they are really good. Clearly ours aren't that good.

Taking appiah as an example he's been given ample opportunities on loan and best he has done is a few goals in league 2. Why should we be giving him a chance?

its an unfortunate downside to being in the top tier. When struggling in the championship with little funds for new players there was a clear path to the first team for our academy hopefuls because often the manager had no choice but to give a youngster his big chance. Perhaps talented youngsters see that too and prefer joining lower league youth set ups where they think they'll get better opportunities.

Call me a wise old sage, but watching Ladapo's awful performance in the pre-season friendly at Bromley, I had a feeling we wouldn't be seeing him in the 1st team

People seem to assume that any of our youngsters could be successful if only we gave them game time. The truth is probably that we don't have anyone good enough at the moment.

I wholeheartedly concur with these sentiments.
I had this discussion with someone only the other night.

Exactly, everyone raves about KaiKai because he's scored a few goals for Shrewsbury and Brentford!!! If these lads were ever going to be good enough, we wouldn't spend two or three years palming them off to various lower league clubs!!

One of the youth team coaches (John Salako?) spoke at a supporters trust event a year or two ago. He was probably more candid than he should have been but, without exactly saying the current crop (at that time) were crap, he did come pretty close. I suspect they still simply aren't good enough. You can argue about why the academy isn't producing the right quality but the fact is it isn't. As others have pointed out, very few clubs have cracked this problem, Southampton probably are the outstanding exception to the general rule.
