On pure footballing ability who would you have in your team Zaha or Townsend? I'm guessing most Palace fans would say Zaha, so why not the same for England?

Good point. I wonder what non-Palace England fans would say. Probably "neither".

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

England haven't beaten what you might call world-class opposition in the knockout stages of a major tournament since 1966.

Winning the World Cup was the worst thing that happened to English football.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

You know what - I'd have Townsend. He has always performed for England, and he's started to perform for us under SA. deserves his place.

I agree with all you say, Dave.

I began (my first post) with the assumption that Wilf goes from strength to strength, so I'm really talking about 'hypothetical future Wilf' not 'current Wilf', in keeping with the title of the thread. There'll certainly be no regret at the FA at the moment, and on balance there's probably no cause for regret (a debateable point, obviously).

I would go further to say that this year has been the first year that Zaha has actually deserved international recognition for his team performances. I can think of a few who have been picked for England who have performed far worse for their teams all season but who still got picked. From Zaha's perspective I think he has answered his critics and has more or less decided enough was enough and opted for Ivory Coast. If he plays really well for them, all you will hear from England selectors will be that he had the wrong attitude. You will never see or hear them agree to the fact that they were wrong. Meanwhile players like James Milner will continue to crawl down the wing! I think he is good enough for England even if that is perhaps as a 30 minute impact player, but what you, I and the rest of the Palace supporters think is irrelevant.

You'd have Townsend over Wilf?

Well the thing about Wilf is that he is only 24 and has really matured over the last season, he has also recovered from what must have been a really shattering experience at Man U; had Ferguson been there for that first year he would have had proper guidance and management, but then we would not have got him back. I think he will just get better and better as he has got that driven element, I am glad he decided to play for the Ivory Coast, he will probably follow the example of Drogba and set up charity to bring your Ivorian's on and given that he has not been valued by England he has done a sensible thing. We can of course now follow the Ivory Coast. All that needs to happen now is that the referees get over themselves and give him some protection...or just do their job.

First sentence: spot on, Cucking. An old chestnut, I know, but England have won just FIVE World Cup knock-out matches since the 1966 World Cup final. 1986, 1990 (2), 2002, 2006. They haven't won ANY in the European Championship, although they did draw with Spain in 1996 and progress on penalties.

Second sentence: I don't agree with that, in absolute terms, but I do see where you are coming from.

That seems to be quite a common view that I think owes more to Palace supporters tunnel vision than having any truth to it as other unfancied, small clubs like Burnley manage to get their players into the England team.

Don't forget that a big part of the snub against Wilf was Big Sam picking Townsend at a time when a direct comparison was easily made and Wilf was by far the better player (i.e. before Andros' January epiphany).

We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football.

1986: Paraguay (3-0)
1990: Belgium (1-0) & Cameroon (3-2)
2002: Denmark (3-0)
2006: Ecuador (1-0)

Hardly a who's who of world football.

The number of times England got the ball into good wide positions yesterday and failed to take the defence on as Wilf does was criminal . The ball just got passed back .It was like Wilf getting the ball and passing it back to Ward all day . Boring football which our Wilf is better off well away from .
England wont regret anything , they would rather bore us all the way to the quarter finals before losing to the first decent team they meet .

And we still need a striker

I thought England were quite s*** and were lucky to get out of that with a point. They had no decent attacking wide players except oxtail chamberpot. They kept cutting inside or trying to put it through the middle where Scotland were too resolute. Very predictable and crying out for someone like Zaha. Lots of possession but virtually no creativity, penetration or threat; Kane was totally anonymous until injury time and only got his equaliser then because the keeper didn't come for a ball that was easily his.
